Katherine and Big Rivers Plumbing Prices
These are typical price ranges for plumbing in Katherine and the surrounding region in normal hours. Travel to outlying towns and stations, freight on parts sent from Darwin, flood damage below floor level and the depth of a bore can all move the final figure.
Hire a Plumber Katherine and Big Rivers NT - Get Local Quotes
On 8 March 2026, during the Katherine River flood, about 450 Katherine properties had no sewerage, and flooded septic systems, tanks and bores across the district needed a licensed plumber before they could be used again. Town water comes from the river and from treated bores, and compulsory water conservation measures still limit garden watering to set days. On stations and in smaller towns such as Mataranka and Pine Creek, a home that draws its water from its own bore, pump and tank can be left dry by one failed part. A plumber who knows the district can tell you whether a fault sits in your own pipes or in Power and Water's mains before any digging starts. Travel time and freight on parts make up a bigger share of the bill out there than they do in town. Post your job on The Quote Yard and we will connect you with licensed plumbers across Katherine and the Big Rivers region who can quote on it.

What Adds to a Big Rivers Plumbing Bill
Plumbers for Katherine, the Big Rivers Towns and the Stations Beyond
Licensed plumbers working out of Katherine typically charge $120 to $180 an hour in normal hours, and a call-out that includes the first hour costs about $150 to $310. Those figures sit inside the bands in the Territory plumber pricing guide, which covers every part of the Northern Territory. The bigger difference out here is how much of a bill goes on travel, since a plumber heading to Timber Creek or a cattle station can spend longer on the road than on the job. Parts that are not on a Katherine shelf have to come down the Stuart Highway from Darwin or from interstate, which adds freight and sometimes a second trip. Treat the ranges on this page as a starting point for checking a quote, and ask for a written reason when a price sits well above them.
Plumbing in this region covers far more than taps and toilets, so it helps to know which licence a job needs before you ring around. A licensed plumber handles water pipes, hot water and fixtures, while sewer and septic drains need a drainer's licence, and a plumber who holds both can do the whole job. Gas work needs a separate gasfitter licence under the Territory's dangerous goods rules, and new bores are drilled by licensed drillers rather than plumbers. Each type of plumbing work is described in more detail on our Territory plumbing services page. Asking which of these licences a plumber holds takes a minute and saves booking someone who cannot finish the job. If a flood repair, a bore pump or a hot water circuit also needs electrical work, our guide to hiring an electrician in Katherine and the Big Rivers sets out the costs and the rules.
Katherine sits in the Top End like Darwin, but its plumbing jobs differ in ways that change the price. The town sits beside a river that flooded homes in 1998, in 2006 and again in March 2026, and parts of the local groundwater carry PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), the firefighting foam chemicals that spread from RAAF Base Tindal. Rural properties outside the town supply run their own bores, tanks and septic systems instead of connecting to Power and Water mains. If you live in the capital, our page on hiring a plumber in Darwin deals with city prices, tree roots and raised homes.
What Common Plumbing Jobs Cost in Katherine
Day to day plumbing in Katherine covers the usual household faults, such as dripping taps, running toilets, blocked drains and hot water units that stop heating. A tap repair typically costs $160 to $360 and a toilet cistern repair $190 to $440, while a drain cleared with a machine runs from $300 to $750. When a whole toilet suite is replaced, the quote should name the maker and model, such as a Caroma suite, along with the tapware brand, such as Methven, so prices can be compared fairly. After a flood, a drain camera inspection at $300 to $580 is a sensible first step, because it shows whether silt or a broken pipe is behind a slow drain. Hot water replacement runs from $1,600 to $2,900 for an electric storage unit up to $3,700 to $6,200 for a heat pump. The table below lists typical 2026 prices in normal hours, before any travel to outlying areas is added.
Two kinds of work vary much more than the rest, and both are worth having inspected before you accept a fixed price. A leak that has pushed up the water bill can cost $450 to $1,700 to find and repair, depending on whether it sits in an exposed pipe, inside a wall or under a slab. Sewer repairs range from a few hundred dollars for a blockage to well over a thousand for a broken pipe, and relining (sealing an old pipe from the inside with a new liner) costs about $650 to $1,250 per metre. Both are easier to price fairly once a plumber has tested the pipes or recorded camera footage, so expect an hourly estimate for the first visit. Get photos or footage from the plumber for anything costly, because a second plumber or your insurer may want to see the evidence.

Call-Out Fees, Travel and Freight From a Katherine Base
The call-out fee pays for the drive and the opening stretch of work on site, which is why booking several small jobs in one visit costs less than booking them one at a time. Inside Katherine, Katherine East and Katherine South, travel is often built into that fee, but trips to Tindal, Cossack or rural blocks along the Victoria Highway may carry an extra charge. Outside normal hours the call-out rises to about $280 to $600 before any work starts, and weekends and public holidays sit at the top of that range. Time after the first hour is billed in fifteen or thirty minute blocks, so check which one the plumber uses before work begins.
Freight can be a sizeable line on a Big Rivers invoice when a part or appliance is not held in Katherine and has to come from Darwin. A replacement Rheem or Dux electric unit may be on a local shelf, but a particular heat pump, a Grundfos bore pump or a part for an older solar system can take days to arrive. Ask whether the quoted unit is in stock in Katherine and, if it is not, how long the freight will take and what it adds. Plumbers based in Darwin do take work here, but Katherine is about a three hour drive from Darwin, so their quote should show that travel time clearly. Planned work is easier to book in the dry season, because wet season storms and floods bring urgent jobs that can push routine work back. Grouping several small repairs into one visit, or sharing a trip with a neighbour, spreads the travel over more than one job.
Lines on a Big Rivers Plumbing Invoice
A single line for materials tells you very little, so ask for parts by brand and model.
Overnight stays on long trips should be agreed in writing before the plumber leaves town.
PFAS Near RAAF Base Tindal and What It Means for Plumbing
PFAS are a group of long-lasting chemicals once used in firefighting foam, and Defence investigations found they had spread from the fire training area and the fire station area at RAAF Base Tindal into surface water and groundwater. The base lies about 15 kilometres outside Katherine, and groundwater from the area makes up part of the town water supply. Defence funded a permanent treatment plant for the town that can treat up to 10 million litres a day, and Power and Water has run it since May 2024. Power and Water says its treatment is designed to make sure PFAS has been removed before town water reaches homes. Defence publishes its monitoring results and management plan, while the utility reports on the town supply, so check the Department of Defence and Power and Water for current figures.
Private bores are where PFAS matters most for a plumber's work, because the 2018 human health risk assessment found that drinking contaminated bore water carried an elevated exposure risk. Defence provides an alternative water supply or rainwater tanks to households whose bore water exceeded drinking water guidelines. If you own a bore near Katherine or Tindal, confirm whether your property is in the PFAS management area before a plumber connects that bore to a kitchen tap or a drinking water filter. An ordinary household filter is not a substitute for that check, and no plumber should claim a filter removes PFAS unless the maker has tested it for that purpose. The NT Environment Protection Authority also publishes advice for the area on eating fish caught in parts of the Katherine River and Tindal Creek.
PFAS and Your Water Source
Katherine's Town Water and the Garden Watering Days
Power and Water draws most of Katherine's town water from the Katherine River, and treated groundwater from bores makes up the rest, about ten per cent by the utility's own figure. That groundwater comes from the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, a layer of limestone rock that holds water underground, and the NT Government describes it as the most productive groundwater system in the plan area and a source of the river's dry season flows. Because of PFAS in groundwater around the town, the NT Government brought in compulsory water conservation measures, and Power and Water says the town's water use, about double the national average, needs to fall by 20 per cent. Odd numbered properties may water gardens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, even numbered properties on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and nobody may water on a Friday. Watering is only allowed between 6pm and 8am, and hosing driveways, footpaths or gutters is not allowed at all. A plumber setting up garden taps or a sprinkler controller for a town home should program it around those days, and the cost of a new system is listed on our irrigation systems page.
Leaks are the biggest cause of wasted water in Katherine, according to Power and Water, and the town uses more water than similar towns. A simple meter test tells you whether you have one: turn every tap off, note the reading and check it again after half an hour. If the dial has moved, a plumber can trace the leak using the equipment described on our leak detection page, along with the costs involved. Fixing a running toilet or a dripping outdoor tap also trims the water bill, which matters more when the garden can only be watered on three days a week.
| Property | Watering Days | Hours | Not Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odd house number | Monday, Wednesday and Saturday | 6pm to 8am | Watering hard surfaces |
| Even house number | Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday | 6pm to 8am | Watering hard surfaces |
| Every property on Friday | No garden watering | None | Any garden watering |
| Driveways, footpaths and gutters | Never | None | Hosing down with town water |
Katherine River Floods in 1998, 2006 and 2026
Katherine has had three major floods in under thirty years, and each one brought water into parts of the town. In January 1998, rain from the remains of Tropical Cyclone Les pushed the river past 20 metres, put about 2 metres of muddy water through the main street and forced around 2,000 people from their homes. The town flooded again in 2006, and the federal ministerial release on disaster assistance described the 2026 event as the most significant flood since then. The March 2026 flood peaked at 19.20 metres, above the 2006 level, and at midday on 8 March Power and Water reported around 1,000 Katherine properties without power and 450 without sewerage. A collapsed sewer main on Giles Street also had to be repaired, and the utility ran temporary bypasses while the work went on. NT Health issued a boil water alert for the town, and it had been lifted for Katherine and Tindal by 15 March 2026.
For plumbing, a flood does most of its damage below floor level, where silt fills drains, pits and pump chambers and water gets into hot water units and their controls. A hot water unit, pressure pump or treatment system controller that sat in floodwater may need replacing rather than repair, and the electrical parts need an electrician's check as well. Power and Water did not reconnect some flooded homes until the owner had a certificate of compliance from an NT licensed electrician, so book that check alongside the plumbing work. Residents were told to photograph and film any flooding of their home, and to check insurer requirements before putting damaged goods out for the verge collections run by Katherine Town Council. Wall linings and floor coverings that soaked up floodwater are building work rather than plumbing, so look to storm damage repairs and water damaged plaster repairs for that side of the clean-up.
| Flood | River Height | What Happened | Plumbing Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1998 | More than 20 metres | About 2 metres of water in the main street | Tanks and units set low are the first to flood |
| 2006 | Below the 2026 peak | Parts of the town flooded again | Repeat flooding makes raised equipment worth the cost |
| March 2026 | 19.20 metres | 450 properties without sewerage on 8 March | Keep the overflow relief gully clear |
| After any flood | Not applicable | Silt in drains, pits and pump chambers | Camera check drains before blaming the sewer main |
Overflow Relief Gullies and Sewage Inside the House
An overflow relief gully is the small grated fitting outside a bathroom or laundry wall, and its job is to let sewage spill outside instead of up through your shower or toilet when the sewer backs up. As the 2026 floodwater dropped, Power and Water asked Katherine residents to check that their gully was clear, because a blocked or buried gully can let sewage back up into the house. On newer homes the gully should sit at least 100 millimetres below the lowest drain inside, such as a shower or basin waste, and at least 150 millimetres above the surrounding ground so stormwater cannot run in. Homes connected to sewerage after the mid-1970s should have one, but older homes may not, and some older gullies can take a newer attachment. The owner is responsible for the gully and the sewer pipes up to the connection point, so any repair is a private plumbing job.
Garden beds, landscaping, pot plants, silt and concrete should never cover a gully, Power and Water warns, because the grate must be able to lift freely. Stormwater from roof downpipes and pool backwash are also on the utility's list of things that must not drain into a gully. Raising or replacing a gully typically costs $250 to $650, and more if paving has to be lifted and relaid around it. If sewage still backs up when the gully is working, our blocked drains page shows how a plumber finds and clears the cause.
Is Your Overflow Relief Gully Working?
Septic Tanks, Rainwater Tanks and Bores After Floodwater
Rural homes that were inundated in 2026 faced a different set of checks, because their septic system, tank and bore are all private. NT Government advice is not to use anything connected to a flooded septic system until every part has been inspected and repaired, and to have the tank pumped out by a listed waste contractor once the groundwater around it has dropped. Aerobic treatment units pump air through the wastewater to treat it, and other secondary treatment systems treat it further than a plain septic tank can. Both kinds should be isolated at the power and checked by a service technician, and units from makers such as Taylex, Envirocycle and Fujiclean each have their own service steps. Repairs to pipes, tanks and drains must be done by a licensed plumber and drainer, and the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Board lists who holds a licence. Routine servicing and replacement costs, which the flood advice does not change, are on our septic systems page.
Private water supplies need just as much care once floodwater has gone down. Rainwater from undamaged above-ground tanks and water from deep bores with properly cased wellheads, the sealed top of the bore, above the ground should be safe, but shallow wells reached by floodwater should be treated as unsafe. Any water that looks, smells or tastes unusual should not be used for drinking, washing or for pets. A damaged tank needs to be emptied, cleaned and sanitised along with its gutters, downpipes and pipes, and nobody should climb inside a tank to do it. Testing for chemicals and germs can be arranged privately, and a plumber can reconnect the pump and pipes once the water is clear. If a steel tank, such as one built from BlueScope Aquaplate steel, has shifted or dented, ask whether it can be reseated or should be replaced before it is refilled.
| Item | Katherine Band | What to Check | Who Does It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Septic tank pumped out after a flood | $500 - $1,100 | Wait for groundwater to drop | Listed waste contractor |
| Septic pipes, pits or tank repaired | $300 - $1,500 | Open covers and exposed pipes | Licensed plumber and drainer |
| Aerobic unit serviced | $180 - $350 | Power isolated until it is checked | Service technician |
| Rainwater tank cleaned and sanitised | Quoted after inspection | Cracks, debris and dead animals | Tank cleaning professional |
| Pressure pump replaced | $750 - $2,000 | Water in the motor or switch | Licensed plumber, electrician for wiring |
| Bore pump replaced | $1,200 - $3,500 | Wellhead casing and controls | Plumber or pump specialist |
Bore Permits in the Daly Roper Beetaloo Water Control District
Katherine and its surrounds fall within the Daly Roper Beetaloo Water Control District, an area declared because its groundwater and river flows need closer management. Inside a water control district, a bore work permit is needed before a new bore is drilled, and the drilling itself is done by a licensed driller rather than a plumber. Stock and domestic use can be exempt from a water extraction licence, depending on the beneficial uses declared for the area (the purposes its water is reserved for), and a separate exemption covers taking up to 5 megalitres, or 5 million litres, a year on one land parcel. The Katherine Water Allocation Plan 2026 to 2036 was declared this year to replace the plan that expired in February, and it gives a greater allocation to stock and domestic use. The plan centres on the Tindall Limestone Aquifer and the dry season flows it feeds into the Katherine River. Permit forms, the plan and its maps are on the NT Government website, and reading them before you ask a driller for a price saves time.
Once the bore is drilled, the plumber's work starts at the wellhead with the pump, the pressure system and the pipe to the house. Submersible bore pumps from makers such as Grundfos, Lowara and Davey typically cost $1,200 to $3,500 to replace, depending on the depth and the flow needed. Where a bore and the town supply share any pipework, a plumber fits a testable backflow device, a valve that stops water flowing back into the supply and can be checked on site, and the testable models made by Zurn Wilkins and Watts need checks by an accredited tester. The rules on when a device is required and how often it must be tested are on our backflow prevention page.
Before Anyone Drills a New Bore
Water Systems on Stations and Rural Blocks
Cattle stations, roadhouses and rural blocks in the Big Rivers region run their own water from bores and tanks, sometimes over long distances between the bore, the house and the stock troughs. Surface pressure pumps from Davey and Onga move water from a tank to the house, and a pump that starts and stops with every tap closed points to a leak or a failing pressure switch. Replacing a pressure pump or pressure tank typically costs $750 to $2,000, and a filter service $160 to $420. Long runs of poly pipe (flexible plastic pipe laid in a trench or on the ground) from makers such as Iplex and Vinidex can be damaged by heat, stock and machinery, so walk the full length of each line once every dry season. Stock water and house water should be kept apart so trough water cannot run back into the drinking supply, which is the same backflow risk that applies in town.
Distance can be the largest cost on station work, because a plumber may drive for hours each way and has to carry every likely part. Sending clear photos of the pump label, the pressure tank, the switch and the pipe sizes before the visit helps the plumber bring the right spares on the first trip. Keeping a spare pressure switch, a pump seal kit and a few common fittings on hand means one visit can fix more faults. Hot water choices on a station depend partly on how far the house is from help, since a simple unit is easier to repair where it stands. Septic systems on stations also need pump-outs by a listed waste contractor, and a long trip makes it sensible to book the pump-out and the plumbing checks together. If a long line breaks and needs an urgent fix, our page on burst pipe repairs describes what the job involves.
| Work | Katherine Band | How Often | Good to Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure pump or tank replaced | $750 - $2,000 | When it fails | Constant cycling is the warning sign |
| Bore pump replaced | $1,200 - $3,500 | When it fails | Depth and flow set the price |
| Water filter serviced | $160 - $420 | As the maker specifies | Cartridges block faster with dirty water |
| Poly line repaired | $280 - $950 plus travel | When it breaks | Note the pipe size and class |
| Septic tank pumped out | $500 - $1,100 plus travel | Every few years | Book it with other station work |
| Backflow device tested | $80 - $150 per device | Yearly for testable devices | Accredited tester needed |
Hot Water That Copes With Katherine's Heat
Heat in the build-up, the hot and humid months before the wet season rains, and in the wet season itself is hard on anything mounted outside, including hot water tanks, heat pumps and solar collectors sitting in full sun. Electric storage units from Rheem, Dux and Thermann typically cost $1,600 to $2,900 to replace, and they are the simplest choice where the unit sits in a shaded spot near the bathroom. Heat pumps from Stiebel Eltron, Reclaim Energy and iStore cost about $3,700 to $6,200 and run well in warm air, though the compressor, the motor driven pump inside the unit, needs space around it and should not sit beside a bedroom. Solar systems from Solahart, Rheem and Apricus cost about $4,500 to $7,800, and in strong sun they rely on a working tempering valve, which blends cold water into the hot, to keep bathroom water at a safe temperature. Solar and heat pump systems may qualify for small-scale technology certificates, which lower the upfront price, through the Clean Energy Regulator, and that discount should appear as its own line on the quote. Tank size matters as much as the type of system, and our hot water systems page gives sizing for different households.
Any hot water unit that sat in floodwater in 2026 should be inspected before it is used again, because water in the controls or insulation can make it unsafe. Units fed by private bore water may need their anode (a metal rod inside the tank that corrodes so the tank lining does not) checked more often, depending on the water quality. A gas continuous flow heater, which heats water only as it flows through, from Rinnai or Bosch is another option where bottled gas is already on site, and it avoids keeping a tank of hot water in the heat. Replacing an element or thermostat at $300 to $680 is often better value than a new system when the tank itself is sound and not leaking. Moving a unit to a shadier spot adds pipework to the job, and you can weigh that cost against a straight swap on our water heater installation page.
| System | Katherine Band | Suits | Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric storage | $1,600 - $2,900 | Shaded sites and simple swaps | Unit in stock or freighted |
| Heat pump | $3,700 - $6,200 | Warm sites with good airflow | Compressor noise near bedrooms |
| Solar with electric booster | $4,500 - $7,800 | Clear north facing roofs | Tempering valve and fixings |
| Gas continuous flow | $1,800 - $3,200 | Homes already using bottled gas | Gas compliance certificate |
| Element or thermostat replaced | $300 - $680 | Sound tanks that are not leaking | Rust at the base of the tank |
| Tempering valve serviced | $180 - $400 | Solar and high temperature tanks | Valve age and water quality |
Bottled Gas and Gasfitting Paperwork
If your home runs on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders or a bulk tank, the gas comes from a national supplier such as Elgas, Origin or Supagas, while the pipes and appliances after the regulator, the valve that lowers the gas pressure from the cylinder, are work for a licensed gasfitter. Gasfitting in the Territory is licensed under the Dangerous Goods Regulations, and a plumbing licence alone does not cover it. After installing, altering or repairing a gas system, the gasfitter must fix a certificate of compliance plate near the gas control valve and give the owner the certificate. A copy of that certificate should reach NT WorkSafe within seven days, so ask for yours before you pay the final invoice.
Gas appliances, regulators and hoses that went under water should be checked by a gasfitter before the gas is turned back on. Heat and sunlight also wear out rubber hoses and regulators, so add a yearly check to another booked visit. A gas appliance service or repair typically costs $170 to $480, and capping off an old gas point $190 to $450. If you smell gas, turn off the cylinder valve if it is safe to do so, leave the house and call the gas supplier or emergency services from outside. Installation costs, cylinder placement and the safety rules are set out in more detail on our gas plumbers page.
Gas Paperwork to Keep
Plumbing in Mataranka, Pine Creek, Timber Creek and Borroloola
The smaller towns in the region are served by plumbers who either live there or drive in from Katherine, and the distances are long. Mataranka sits on the Stuart Highway south of Katherine and Pine Creek on the same highway to the north, so both are close enough for a day trip. Timber Creek is a long drive south west along the Victoria Highway, and Borroloola is much further, near the Gulf of Carpentaria and reached along the Carpentaria Highway. Roads to some of these places can close in the wet season, so a plumber may not reach a job for days after heavy rain. For anything beyond a simple repair, expect the quote to include travel time, fuel or kilometres, and sometimes an overnight stay. Daly Waters and Larrimah, further south on the Stuart Highway, raise the same questions about travel and parts.
Grouping work can cut a remote bill, because one trip can cover a pump, a hot water unit and a septic check. If the house also needs a septic pump-out, ask whether the plumber can line up the visit with the waste contractor so both happen in the same week. Before the trip, get the plumber to confirm which parts they will carry, since a missing fitting may mean a second long drive. For rural blocks south of Darwin, which face similar travel questions, see our page on hiring a plumber in Palmerston and Litchfield.
| Town | Road From Katherine | Work to Group Into One Trip | What Adds Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mataranka | South on the Stuart Highway | Pumps, hot water and drains | Travel time |
| Pine Creek | North on the Stuart Highway | Hot water, tanks and taps | Travel time |
| Daly Waters and Larrimah | Further south on the Stuart Highway | Bore pumps and septic systems | Long travel and parts |
| Timber Creek | South west on the Victoria Highway | Pumps, tanks and septic checks | Possible overnight stay |
| Borroloola | Carpentaria Highway towards the Gulf | Every job the household has | Freight and wet season roads |
Remote Communities, Homelands and Land Council Permits
In communities such as Barunga, Ngukurr and Numbulwar, the water, sewerage and power systems are run through the Indigenous Essential Services program. The program is coordinated by the NT Government, and Power and Water's not for profit subsidiary, Indigenous Essential Services, supports 72 remote communities with electricity, water and sewerage. Faults in a community's water or sewer mains are therefore reported to that essential services provider rather than fixed by a private plumber. Homelands and outstations are supported through the Homelands Program, which funds service providers to help residents with essential services and housing maintenance. A private plumber may still be engaged for work inside a building, such as a shop or a privately owned house, where the owner is responsible for the pipes.
Roper Gulf Regional Council says permit requirements apply to everyone visiting its Aboriginal communities for work, including contractors, and the permits are issued by the Northern Land Council (NLC). The council lists Barunga, Beswick, Ngukurr and Numbulwar among the communities in its area where an NLC permit is needed. The NLC asks applicants to allow up to 10 days for a standard work permit, so it has to be arranged before the trip is booked. A quote for community work should say who is applying for the permit and whether the waiting time affects the start date. Freight to places such as Numbulwar can also mean ordering parts well ahead, since a missing fitting may not be available locally. Electricians face the same planning, and our page on remote community electricians describes how trades organise these trips.

When a Plumbing Emergency Hits During a Flood or After Hours
A burst pipe that will not stop, sewage coming up inside the house and a smell of gas are the problems that justify an after hours call at $280 to $600 before work starts. Turning off the water at the meter, or switching off the bore pump on a rural block, often turns a burst pipe into a job that can wait until morning. During a flood, keep out of areas that Power and Water crews have cordoned off, and avoid floodwater, which the utility warned may be contaminated with sewage. Wear rubber boots, gloves and washable overalls for any sewage clean-up, wash your hands with soap and clean warm water, and see a doctor if you become unwell. Typical costs for urgent work across the Territory are listed on our emergency plumbers page.
If you are unhappy with plumbing work, put the complaint in writing to the business first, with photos, the quote and any certificate. Complaints about a licensed plumber or drainer can go to the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Board, which also lets you check a licence before you book anyone. NT Consumer Affairs helps with consumer rights, and money disputes that cannot be settled can go to the Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Complaints about Power and Water that the utility does not resolve can be taken to the Ombudsman NT at no cost. Gas safety concerns belong with NT WorkSafe, the body that receives gas compliance certificates. All plumbing and drainage in the Territory has to meet AS/NZS 3500, the national plumbing standard, which Standards Australia publishes.
What to Look Out For on a Katherine Region Plumbing Quote
Read every line of a quote before you compare totals, and look for any items that have been left out. Travel, freight and the call-out should each appear separately, and a quote for an outlying town should state the hours or kilometres being charged. Flood repair quotes should say whether the drains have been camera checked, whether the overflow relief gully is included and whether removal of damaged units is in the price. For bore work near Tindal, the quote should note whether the bore is inside the PFAS management area and what the water will be used for. Hot water quotes should name the brand, model and tank size, and gas quotes should include the compliance certificate and plate. If the job is in a community on Aboriginal land, the quote should also say who arranges the work permit.
Watch for a few warning signs before you sign any quote. A firm price for a leak or a blocked drain that nobody has investigated cannot be accurate, and it is likely to change once work starts. Be careful with anyone who promises that a filter will make PFAS affected bore water safe, unless they can show test results for that product. Ask for a licence number, and be wary of a large cash deposit requested before any paperwork exists. After a flood, ask which licences a plumber offering drain or septic repairs holds, because that work needs a drainer's licence as well.
Checks Before You Sign a Big Rivers Quote
A fixed price for a hidden fault that nobody has inspected is not reliable.
A filter sold as removing PFAS should come with test results for that model.
How to Get Quotes You Can Compare Around Katherine
Quotes only compare fairly when every plumber is pricing the same job, so send each one the same written description. Give the town or property name, and for a station, the distance from Katherine and the condition of the road at that time of year. Say whether your water comes from the town supply, a bore or a tank, and whether the house is on sewer or a septic system. Mention whether the property was flooded in 2026 and what has already been cleaned or replaced since. Add photos of the problem, the hot water unit's label, the pump label and the overflow relief gully outside the bathroom or laundry. A few minutes spent on this saves several phone calls and makes the quotes much easier to line up.
For anything above a few hundred dollars, three quotes give a fair picture where enough plumbers cover your area. In a small town there may only be one or two plumbers willing to travel, so ask each for a detailed written scope that you can check line by line. Check how long the price holds, when they can start and which items could change once a drain is opened or a pump is pulled. If your drains are clogged by silt or grease, our drain cleaning page lists the methods a plumber may quote for. Where the pipe is cracked rather than just blocked, our pipe relining page sets out when lining it is a better option than digging it up.
Anyone buying a home in Katherine can avoid surprise repair bills with a few plumbing checks before settlement. Find out whether the house was flooded in 1998, 2006 or 2026, and whether the drains, hot water unit and electrical fittings were checked afterwards. A drain camera inspection at $300 to $580 shows whether silt or a broken pipe is already present. Look at the overflow relief gully to see that it sits above the ground and can lift freely. On a rural block, ask for the bore work permit, the pump's age, the septic service records and whether the bore is in the PFAS management area. A plumber can combine these checks in one visit, and the findings can help when negotiating the price.
Keep every quote, invoice and certificate until the job is finished and any warranty has run out. Those records help the next plumber understand what has already been done and support any insurance claim after a future flood. If a flooded room still smells musty after the plumbing is fixed, our mould removal page deals with the next step. Electrical costs for pumps and hot water circuits are set out in the Territory electrician pricing guide, which is useful when a job needs both trades.
