Standard stump grinding goes 200-300mm below ground level, which is sufficient for laying
turf or garden beds. If you're planning to concrete or pave over the area, deeper grinding
may be required. Let your arborist know your plans so they can grind to the appropriate depth.
Will the roots die after stump grinding?
Most roots will die and decompose naturally after the stump is removed. Some species may
produce shoots from remaining roots, but these can usually be controlled by mowing or
spot treatment. Your arborist can advise if your tree species is likely to regrow.
Can stumps be ground in tight spaces?
Yes, various sizes of stump grinders are available including compact machines for tight
access. However, the machine needs to reach the stump, so minimum access of around 80cm
is usually required. Discuss access limitations when getting quotes.
What happens to the mulch?
Stump grinding produces wood chip mulch, typically more volume than the original stump.
This can be spread on garden beds, used elsewhere in your yard, or removed for an additional
