Hire an Electrician Mackay and Whitsundays QLD - Get Local Quotes

Electrical prices in Mackay and the Whitsundays depend far more on the type of house, the salt air, cyclone preparation and travel distance than on the hourly rate. Older raised timber homes near the city centre let an electrician run cable under the floor, while lowset block homes from the 1970s and 1980s have solid walls that make the same job slower. Air conditioning is the largest load in most houses for much of the year, so a switchboard that suited a home decades ago often runs out of room once the owners add a second or third split system, which is a wall air conditioner with its own outdoor compressor. Cyclone Debbie crossed the coast near Airlie Beach in March 2017, and the long blackouts that followed led many households to add surge protection, a generator connection and stronger fixings for outdoor equipment. Near the beaches, salt spray corrodes outdoor fittings, brackets and terminals much faster than it does inland. Cane farms and acreage blocks in the Pioneer Valley and around Proserpine add pumps, sheds, long cable runs and privately owned power poles. Ergon Energy runs the network across the whole region, and any change to the supply, a new solar system or a meter upgrade has to go through Ergon or your retailer. Every existing Queensland home also needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027, so many older houses will need new alarms fitted before that date. Post your job on The Quote Yard and we will connect you with licensed electricians across Mackay and the Whitsundays who can quote on it.

Mackay and Whitsundays Electrical Work Covered

Around Mackay, the biggest differences between electrical quotes come from how the house is built, how full the switchboard is and how long the drive to the job takes. A raised timber home close to the city is usually quicker to wire than a block home on a slab, and a job in an outlying town or on a cane farm often carries travel and trenching on top. We can connect you with licensed electricians near your home who all quote against the same written scope.

What Pushes Up a Local Electrical Bill

What is involved
House style sets most of the labour on small jobs. A raised timber home gives the electrician open space under the floor for new cable, while a lowset concrete block home has solid walls and often a cramped roof space that gets very hot by late morning, so the same power point takes noticeably longer.
The switchboard decides most of the larger figures on a quote. Many homes from the 1960s to the 1980s still have ceramic fuses or a board with no spare positions, and some have a backing panel that may contain asbestos. Adding air conditioning, a pool pump, an induction cooktop or an EV charger to a board like that usually means replacing it first.
Living close to the sea adds cost to most outdoor electrical work. Homes near the beaches need corrosion resistant fittings and stainless steel or galvanised fixings, and outdoor air conditioning units and solar panels need brackets that will hold in cyclone winds.
Distance matters once a job leaves the city. Sarina is a short drive south, the upper Pioneer Valley is further inland, and Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Bowen are well over an hour north, and each of those drives adds time to the job.
The ranges in this table assume weekday hours and an electrician based in the nearest large town. After hours work, long drives, trenching and asbestos removal are charged on top of these figures.

Before You Call a Local Electrician

Note the suburb or town, whether the home is raised timber, lowset block or a newer brick build, its rough age, how many air conditioners it runs and whether it is a rental or part of a body corporate. If you can, take a photo of the open switchboard as well. On a farm or acreage block, add the distance from the house to the shed or pump and whether the supply comes through a private pole.

What Electrical Work Costs Across Mackay and the Whitsundays

Licensed electricians in Mackay mostly charge between $95 and $150 per hour on weekdays, with a minimum charge of $110 to $200 on the first visit. Contractors in the Whitsunday towns and in Sarina work within much the same range. Because rates vary so little, the hourly figure seldom explains why two invoices for one job differ. Most of the gap between two quotes comes from the labour each job needs, and the sections below explain where that labour goes. If an hourly rate looks high, compare it with the statewide ranges in the Queensland electrician pricing guide before accepting the quote.

Travel time is the main reason a price changes from one part of the region to another. The city and the northern beaches have the most electricians and the shortest drives. Inland, the Pioneer Valley runs west past Mirani toward Eungella, and the chance of a travel fee rises the further up the valley a job sits. Sarina is roughly half an hour south of the city by road, while Proserpine is about an hour and a half north. Airlie Beach is a short drive beyond Proserpine, and Bowen sits further north again along the highway. The larger Whitsunday towns have electrical contractors of their own, so most jobs there do not need anyone to drive up from Mackay.

Jobs on the Queensland electrical services list are charged in one of three ways, and knowing which one a quote uses makes comparison easier. A small job that is fully visible before work starts, like a light fitting, a fan on an existing point or a replacement smoke alarm, should get a fixed price. A switchboard, rewire or supply upgrade should be fixed too, though only once the board has been opened and the house inspected. Tracing a fault is billed by the hour, because nobody can tell at the start how long the search will take.

Mackay and Whitsundays Electrical Prices by Job

Demand for electricians here changes with the seasons and with the age of local homes. Air conditioning circuits, ceiling fans and board upgrades are busiest in the hotter months, and storm repairs and surge protection climb once the wet season arrives. With the 1 January 2027 smoke alarm deadline close, booking that upgrade soon avoids a rush late in the year. Landlords and body corporate managers add a regular flow of safety switch checks and small repairs between tenants and guests. The table gives 2026 ranges for common household jobs in the city, the valley and the Whitsunday towns. When a quote falls far outside a range, find out what it covers before judging it.

Two factors explain most of the spread in small job quotes. One is the cable route, which is short under a raised timber floor and slow through the solid walls of a block home on a slab. The other is the board, since a full board with no spare positions, meaning no free slots for another switch or breaker, can turn a single new circuit into a partial upgrade. Grouping small jobs into one booking means paying one minimum charge instead of several, and the saving is larger where a travel fee applies. Before calling, make a list of faulty switches, broken lights and outdoor points you want added so they are priced as one visit.

Job Typical Price Charged As Main Variable
Power point, raised timber home $180 - $350 Fixed Room under the floor
Power point, lowset block home $260 - $470 Fixed Surface cover, groove or roof route
Ceiling fan on an existing point $190 - $440 Fixed Ceiling height and bracing
LED (light emitting diode) downlight swap, each $70 - $150 Fixed per light Number of lights and roof access
Linked smoke alarm, each $150 - $280 Fixed per alarm Wired or ten year battery
Safety switch added $340 - $800 Fixed Spare positions on the board
Whole switchboard replaced $1,450 - $3,800 Fixed once inspected Asbestos panel and number of circuits
Fault finding, first hour $150 - $300 Hourly, written estimate Moisture, corrosion and wiring age

How Electricians Charge and What Distance Adds

A minimum charge of $110 to $200 applies to the first visit, and it is payable even when the repair is finished in a few minutes. Calling someone out at night, on a Sunday or during a storm costs $210 to $520 before any repair begins. Extra tasks added while the electrician is already there usually cost only the added labour and parts. Ask when booking whether the minimum charge covers half an hour or a full hour on site. Public holidays usually sit at the top of the after hours range.

On a regional job, travel can add more to the bill than any difference in hourly rates. Mackay businesses generally treat the city suburbs, the northern beaches and Walkerston as local, with no travel charge. Sarina, Mirani and Marian sit a little further out, and some contractors add a small fee for them. Eungella, the upper valley and outlying cane farms often carry a fee of $60 to $250, unless a nearby electrician takes the work. Some contractors charge travel as a flat amount, while others charge by the kilometre or for the hours spent on the road. Country electricians sometimes keep set days for outlying areas, so asking about their schedule can reduce the fee.

Minimum charge
$110 to $200 for the first block of time, used or not
Travel fee
Commonly $60 to $250 for the upper valley, the far south and farms
Trenching

Fault finding, where the search itself takes the time

Roof work in a lowset home is often booked for early morning, before the roof space heats up.

Parts are charged on top of labour, so ask for each one to be listed by name.

Trenching is often quoted as a rate per metre, so ask what depth and conduit that rate includes. Rock, tree roots and wet ground can all slow the digging and raise the final figure.

Rewiring by Housing Style, From Raised Timber to Block Homes

Many homes in the older suburbs around the Mackay city centre are timber houses raised on stumps, with open space beneath the floor. Cable can be run through that space and up into the wall frames with very little cutting of linings. Rewiring a three bedroom raised timber home usually costs $9,000 to $16,000, depending on roof access and how many new circuits are added. If the lower level has been enclosed and lined, the easy route is gone and the price can rise by several thousand dollars. Old framing sometimes reveals termite damage once walls are opened, so the quote should say who handles it.

Lowset houses from the 1970s and 1980s, built from rendered concrete block or brick on a slab, take longer. Solid block walls have no hollow cavity, so new cable has to sit in a surface cover, run in a groove cut into the block or drop from a low roof space that heats up quickly. Rewiring one of these homes typically costs $10,000 to $18,000, and plenty of owners do it room by room during renovations. Brick veneer homes in newer suburbs such as Andergrove and Glenella have a usable wall cavity and seldom need a full rewire. Work in those suburbs is mostly extra circuits for cooling, a pool, solar or an electric vehicle (EV) charger. Houses built before about 1990 may contain asbestos in fibro sheeting, eaves or the board's backing panel, so drilling should wait until it has been checked.

The Whitsunday towns bring a different mix of electrical work. Bowen and Proserpine have many older town homes, and rewiring them follows the same pattern as older houses in Mackay, with travel added if the electrician comes from the city. Around Airlie Beach and Cannonvale, a large share of homes are apartments, holiday units and houses on newer estates, so the work is mostly repairs, upgrades and body corporate jobs rather than full rewires. For a unit, the electrician needs to know whether the board, meter and cable route are inside the lot or in common property before pricing the job.

Housing Style Typical Areas Rewire Band Why
Raised timber home, open underneath West, East, South and North Mackay $9,000 - $16,000 Cable runs under the floor with little cutting
Older town home in the north Bowen, Proserpine $9,500 - $17,000 plus travel Old framing, storm repairs, distance
1970s and 1980s lowset block Middle ring suburbs and older beach streets $10,000 - $18,000 No cavity and a hot, low roof space
1990s onward brick veneer Andergrove, Glenella, Rural View Rarely needed Modern wiring, extra circuits instead
Apartment or holiday unit Airlie Beach, Cannonvale $4,000 - $9,000 per unit Body corporate approval and access
Single room while walls are open Any house $1,300 - $3,600 Linings already off, far less labour

Safety Switch and Smoke Alarm Rules in Queensland

Two Queensland rules touch nearly every home here and often change what a quote contains. A safety switch, or residual current device (RCD), turns a circuit off in a fraction of a second when it detects current leaking to earth, for example through someone touching a faulty appliance. Under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2026, in force since 1 September 2026, a licensed electrician generally may not carry out installation work in a home whose power point circuits lack an approved safety switch, unless fitting one is part of the job. Anyone who becomes the owner of a home must have those circuits protected within 90 days of the possession date. For an older house still on ceramic fuses, this can turn a single new power point into a small board upgrade. Adding protection to the lighting circuits at the same visit costs little extra and is worth raising.

From 1 January 2027, all existing Queensland homes need photoelectric smoke alarms, which detect smoke with a light sensor, complying with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014 and linked so that every alarm sounds when one detects smoke. They must be on each storey, in each bedroom and in any hallway joining bedrooms to the rest of the house. A licensed electrician can hardwire them with a backup power source, or you can use alarms with a ten year battery that cannot be removed. Clipsal, Brooks and Red Smoke Alarms each make linked photoelectric models, and the choice between wired and wireless linking is the main decision in any smoke alarm installation. Rentals and homes being sold must already comply, and sellers declare the upgrade on a Form 24, the property transfer information form. Full placement rules, including homes without a hallway, are on the Queensland Fire Department website.

Requirement Who Deadline Typical Cost
Approved safety switch on power points New owners 90 days from possession $340 - $800 where the board has room
Approved safety switch on power points Owners starting a tenancy 90 days from the tenancy start $340 - $800 where the board has room
Linked photoelectric smoke alarms All existing homes 1 January 2027 $900 - $1,800, three bedrooms
Alarm testing and cleaning Landlords 30 days before each tenancy Often done with other checks
Certificate of testing and compliance Every completed installation job As soon as possible after the work Included in the price

Switchboards, Meter Boxes and Three Phase Supply

Board work produces the biggest everyday electrical bills, and the enclosure, which is the box and backing panel holding the switches, often sets the price. Fitting a safety switch where positions are free costs $340 to $800, a partial upgrade runs $850 to $2,100, and replacing the whole board costs $1,450 to $3,800. Plenty of homes from the 1960s to the 1980s still run on ceramic fuses, the old rewirable fuses that sit in porcelain holders, in a cramped board, and the cable from the meter often needs replacing as well. Clipsal, Hager and ABB each make complete ranges of enclosures, breakers and safety switches, so a quote should name the brand and how many spare positions remain. Ask whether a switchboard upgrade price also covers labelling every circuit and testing each safety switch once the new board is in.

Many boards installed before about 1990 are mounted on a panel that may contain asbestos, which should never be drilled or cut. A licensed removalist usually adds $550 to $1,800, and the asbestos removal is booked as a separate job before the electrician starts. The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency advises that homes built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos somewhere, so a panel of that age should be tested or treated as asbestos. Moving a meter box costs $2,000 to $5,500 and takes longer to book, because the incoming supply is on the network side and new meters come through your retailer. A change from single phase to three phase supply, which brings three active wires into the house so it can run bigger loads, costs roughly $3,000 to $9,000 where the street can support it. On exposed coastal sites, an upgrade is a good time to move an outdoor board away from sea spray and driving rain.

Work Price Range Network Steps Main Variable
Partial board upgrade $850 - $2,100 No How many devices are added
Whole board replaced $1,450 - $3,800 Sometimes Enclosure, mains cable, circuits
Asbestos panel removed $550 - $1,800 No Panel size and removalist fees
Meter box moved $2,000 - $5,500 Yes New location and retailer booking
Three phase supply added $3,000 - $9,000 Yes Capacity in the street
Sub board for a shed or granny flat $1,000 - $3,200 No Cable distance and trenching

Ergon Energy, Tariffs and Who Owns What

Ergon Energy Network, owned by the state through the Energy Queensland group, builds and maintains the poles and wires across this region and the rest of regional Queensland. Street poles, mains and the service line, the cable from the street to your house, sit on the network side, while everything from the connection point into the house belongs to the owner. A blackout covering the whole street is Ergon's job to fix free of charge, whereas power lost at one house usually means calling an electrician. Changes to the supply, new solar and new meters all need paperwork with Ergon or the retailer, which adds lead time.

Most local households buy electricity from Ergon Energy Retail, whose regulated prices are set by the Queensland Competition Authority. A community service obligation subsidy from the Queensland Government lets regional customers pay the same regulated tariffs wherever they live, even though supplying a large, thinly spread network costs more. Many electric hot water systems use an economy tariff, a cheaper rate where power is supplied only at set times, and tariff 31 supplies power for at least eight hours a day to large tanks that reheat overnight. Tariff 33 supplies power for at least 18 hours a day and is used mainly for pool pumps and for some heat pump and solar water heaters. A new hot water unit, solar system or heat pump can change which tariff is cheapest, so raise it before any meter wiring changes. Billing, connection and metering complaints that Ergon or your retailer has not resolved can go to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland at no cost.

Air Conditioning, Ceiling Fans and Hot Water

For much of the year, cooling is the largest electrical load in local homes, and many now run two or three split systems, each with an indoor wall unit and an outdoor compressor. Each split system normally has a dedicated circuit, and the electrical work alone costs $300 to $750 depending on cable length and board space. Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu make both split and ducted reverse cycle units, which heat as well as cool, and each model's manual lists the circuit rating needed for a split system installation. A whole house ducted system can exceed what an older single phase supply can deliver, so ducted air conditioning installation work should begin with a supply check. Near the coast, ask what will hold the outdoor unit, because salt air rusts plain steel and cyclone winds put heavy loads on wall brackets.

Ceiling fans cost little to run and reduce how often the air conditioner is needed, which makes them useful in raised timber homes and new estates alike. Fitting a fan to an existing light point usually costs $190 to $440, while a new point with its own wall control runs $300 to $620. Hunter Pacific and Fanco both make ceiling fans, including models with DC (direct current) motors, which use less power and run more quietly than older AC (alternating current) motor fans. High raked ceilings and outdoor patio fans take longer to install, because they need extra bracing or an outdoor rated model, so mention them when booking a ceiling fan installation.

Hot water is the other large electrical job, and the type of system decides most of the electrician's part. Swapping an electric storage tank for a like for like unit needs little new wiring, while a heat pump may need a new circuit, a different tariff or a timer. Rheem, Stiebel Eltron and iStore all make heat pump water heaters, which move heat from the surrounding air into the water and suit warm conditions. Installing one normally involves a plumber for the water connections and an electrician for the circuit, so ask who is arranging each part of the hot water system installation. The water connections, the tempering valve that mixes in cold water so bathroom taps cannot scald, and removal of the old tank are plumbing costs, which are covered under hiring a plumber in Mackay and the Whitsundays. Where the outdoor unit goes is worth discussing early, because its fan and compressor make a low hum while running.

Job Electrical Cost Board Upgrade Deciding Factor
Split system circuit $300 - $750 Sometimes Cable run and free positions
Ducted system needing more supply $4,000 - $10,500 Yes Network work in the street
Ceiling fan, new point and wall control $300 - $620 No Roof access and ceiling height
Heat pump hot water circuit $300 - $700 Rarely Tariff choice and unit position
Pool pump circuit and outdoor outlet $450 - $1,200 Sometimes Distance from the board and trenching

Cyclone Season, Storms and Surge Protection

The official tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and the Whitsunday coast has been hit directly more than once since 2010. Cyclone Ului crossed the coast near Airlie Beach on 21 March 2010, and about 60,000 homes lost power across the Mackay, Proserpine and Collinsville area. Cyclone Debbie crossed near Airlie Beach on 28 March 2017, with gusts of up to 263 kilometres an hour recorded on Hamilton Island. After blackouts of that length, many households choose to add surge protection, a generator connection or a home battery with backup. Before the season starts, outdoor air conditioning units, solar panels, external lights and the switchboard enclosure should all be checked for loose or rusted fixings. Storm damage repairs cover the building side of recovery, while the electrical side should begin with a safety check of the board.

Lightning close to the network can push a voltage spike down the lines, damaging inverters, air conditioner control boards, televisions and pool gear. A surge protection device at the switchboard, usually $300 to $650, shields the whole installation from the larger spikes that come in through the supply. Hager and Schneider Electric each make surge devices that clip onto the same rail inside the board as the safety switches, so one or two free positions are needed. No device can prevent damage from a direct strike, but those are much rarer than surges arriving along the wires. Adding surge and lightning protection during a board upgrade avoids a second visit, because the board is already open.

A generator can run the fridge and lights through a long outage, but it must never be plugged into a power point to feed the house. Queensland requires a licensed electrician to connect a generator to household circuits through a fixed changeover switch, so the home takes power from the grid or the generator and never both together. Without that switch, generator power can travel back out into the network and put line crews at risk. An outdoor inlet and changeover switch usually cost $800 to $1,900, and Honda is one of the makers of portable inverter generators sold for home backup. If floodwater has reached the wiring and Ergon has cut the supply, a licensed electrical contractor must inspect the installation, repair it and complete the paperwork before reconnection. Where an Ergon crew has already visited, it leaves an electricity defect report for the contractor to complete and sign once repairs are done.

Before 1 November Each Year

$800 to $1,900 for a weatherproof generator inlet and a fixed changeover switch at the board
Item to check
Why it matters here
Air conditioner wall brackets
Rusted bolts can let a heavy unit work loose in strong wind
Outdoor power point covers
Cracked covers let driving rain in and trip safety switches
Branches over the service line
A falling limb can pull the line from the house

Check that the isolator beside each outdoor unit, the switch that cuts its power, still works and has a sound cover.

Do not switch anything back on after water has reached the wiring or the switchboard. Photograph the damage for your insurer and wait for a licensed electrical contractor to test the installation.

Cane Farms, Irrigation Pumps, Sheds and Private Poles

Cane farms and acreage around Sarina, near Proserpine and through the Pioneer Valley need electrical work that suburban homes seldom require. Irrigation and bore pumps, tank pressure pumps, machinery sheds and workshops all depend on correctly sized cable, normally buried, because undersized cable on a long run drops voltage and can stop a motor starting or make it overheat. Expect $700 to $2,400 for a bore or pressure pump circuit, and $1,200 to $4,500 for a sub board, meaning a smaller switchboard in the shed, fed from the house. Wet season ground can make trenching impractical, so outdoor cable runs are easier to plan for the dry months.

Some of the poles on a rural property may belong to the landholder rather than to Ergon. Ergon's own poles carry an identifying pole number about 2.4 metres above the ground, so a pole on your land without one may be private, and Ergon can confirm who owns it. Keeping private poles and lines safe is the owner's duty, and Ergon and the Electrical Safety Office both advise having them inspected every five years. A licensed electrical contractor with experience in pole inspections can do this, checking the pole below ground level where rot and termites tend to start. Trees growing near private lines are also the owner's responsibility, and Ergon says trimming should be left to a qualified arborist. After a storm, get a leaning pole, a sagging line or a cracked crossarm, the bar at the top that holds the wires, looked at without delay.

Replacing or relocating a private pole, or moving the point where supply connects, needs paperwork lodged with Ergon by your contractor. Taking a private overhead line underground ends pole maintenance, though trenching gets expensive over long distances. For a new shed, laying conduit, the plastic pipe that cable runs through, before the slab goes down saves considerable labour, so the electrician should talk to whoever handles the shed and garage construction before the pour. A workshop that will run a welder or three phase machines needs a supply check before anything is purchased.

Farm Job Price Range Network Steps Main Variable
Bore or irrigation pump circuit $700 - $2,400 No Trench length and motor size
Shed sub board and cable $1,200 - $4,500 No Distance and planned load
Private pole inspection $250 - $600 No How many poles and the drive
Private pole replaced $3,500 - $8,500 Yes Site access and line work
Overhead line put underground $4,000 - $15,000 Yes Trench length and wet ground

Rentals, Holiday Units and Body Corporate Duties

Renting out a home brings electrical duties that owner occupiers do not carry. If a tenancy begins and the power point circuits have no approved safety switch, the owner has 90 days from the start of the tenancy to have one fitted. Rental smoke alarms must already be linked photoelectric types, and the landlord has to test and clean each one in the 30 days before a tenancy starts. Queensland electrical safety law also places a general duty on owners and managers to keep a rental electrically safe for the people living in or visiting it. A single electrician visit between tenancies, covering safety switch tests, smoke alarm checks and minor repairs, deals with most of these duties together.

Holiday units and apartments around Airlie Beach and Cannonvale split electrical duties between each owner and the body corporate. In most unit blocks, the wiring inside each lot belongs to that owner, while common area lighting, lifts, pool equipment and the main switchroom fall to the body corporate. Before booking work, check the community management statement or ask the body corporate manager which side a board or cable sits on. Short stay units also need work timed around guest bookings, so ask whether the electrician can attend on changeover days and whether that changes the price. Work on shared property counts as strata common area repairs, which the body corporate usually has to approve. The Electrical Safety Office publishes guidance for landlords and property managers on what to check between tenants.

Power Points, Lighting and Fittings Near the Sea

Power points show the price gap between raised and lowset homes more clearly than any other small job. On an existing circuit, a new power point in a raised timber home usually costs $180 to $350, since cable comes straight up through the floor. In a lowset block home the same point costs $260 to $470, because the cable must come down from the roof or run in a surface cover. Clipsal and HPM each offer several ranges of power points and switch plates, so picking one at the start keeps new outlets matching the existing ones. A double outlet or one with USB charging points uses the same cable as a single outlet, so choosing one during a power point installation adds little to the labour.

Swapping halogen downlights for LED (light emitting diode) fittings usually costs $70 to $150 per light, with the price per light falling as more are done. LED lights also give off far less heat, which matters in hot roof spaces with insulation close to the fittings. Near the beaches, outdoor lights need a suitable weather rating and housings that resist corrosion, because salt spray corrodes plain metal quickly. Brilliant and Mercator both make outdoor light fittings, and each one on the quote should show its IP (ingress protection) rating, a two digit code for how well it keeps out dust and water. Sensor lights over carports, sheds and driveways are usually priced as part of an outdoor lighting installation, with each light needing a cable run from the nearest circuit. Inside the house, a dimmer must suit the LED driver, the small power unit inside the light, so check the two match when pricing a lighting installation.

Small Job Prices by House Type

Job
Raised timber, then lowset block
Extra power point on a circuit
$180 to $350, then $260 to $470
Light point with its own switch
$270 to $550, then $370 to $740
Weatherproof outdoor outlet
$260 to $490, then $300 to $580
Sensor light over a door or carport
$220 to $450, then $260 to $520

Making good a cut wall, with patching and paint, is normally extra unless it is written into the quote.

For homes within sight of the water, ask for stainless steel screws and brackets on every outdoor fitting. Plain steel hardware can rust through within a few years in salt air.

Tracing Faults in a Humid Coastal Climate

A fixed price for fault finding is rarely fair, since the length of the search is unknown until it begins. Budget $150 to $300 for the first hour, ask for a written estimate before more time is spent, and agree on a point where the electrician stops and calls you. Typical causes in this climate are moisture inside outdoor fittings, corroded terminals close to the coast and ageing cable whose insulation has broken down in the heat. Faults that come and go take the longest to find, so tell the electrician how often they happen before any electrical fault finding begins.

If a safety switch trips in heavy rain, water has usually reached an outdoor power point, a garden light or a buried joint. On farms and acreage, a pump that trips at start-up or lights that dim when a motor runs often mean undersized cable or a motor that is starting to fail. Rats and termites can also chew cable in roof spaces and under raised floors, causing faults that are hard to locate. A burning smell, a scorched outlet, sparks or a board that will not reset calls for an emergency electrician immediately. Buyers of older homes can find many of these problems early by booking an electrical safety inspection before settlement.

Details That Shorten the Search

$150 to $300 covers the first hour, and more time should only follow a written estimate
Symptom
Likely cause
Safety switch trips in heavy rain
Water in an outdoor fitting or underground joint
Power trips when several air conditioners run
Circuits overloaded or a board near its limit
Green or white crust on outdoor terminals
Salt corrosion that needs the fitting replaced

A fault that only shows up in wet weather is easier to trace soon after rain.

Never hold a tripping safety switch in the on position or ask for it to be removed. It is protecting you from a fault that still needs to be found.

Solar, Batteries and EV Chargers

On suburban roofs and cane farm sheds alike, expect about $4,800 to $8,500 for a 6.6kW (kilowatt) solar system after the federal discount, which comes from small-scale technology certificates that the installer claims and deducts from your price under a scheme overseen by the Clean Energy Regulator. An inverter turns the output of the panels into household power, and Fronius, SMA and Sungrow each make inverters for home use. On this coast, ask how the panels and rails are fastened and whether the mounting system is rated for cyclone winds. Ergon must approve each new system before connection, and in some areas it caps how much power a system may export. A new solar panel installation is sized to the household's daytime use, while an older system that has stopped producing power often needs only inverter repairs and replacement rather than new panels.

Queensland requires an emergency backstop wherever the solar and hybrid inverters on a site add up to 10kVA (kilovolt-amperes, a measure of inverter size) or more. The backstop is a small signalling device that lets the network switch off solar exports in a grid emergency, and a hybrid inverter is one that runs both panels and a battery. That rule started on 6 February 2023, and inverters that run only a battery are left out of it. Since July 2025 the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has cut the upfront price of eligible batteries, provided they are fitted by an installer with battery accreditation from Solar Accreditation Australia. From 1 May 2026 the discount became tiered, paying the full rate on the first 14 kilowatt hours (kWh) of usable capacity, 60 per cent of that rate from 14kWh to 28kWh and 15 per cent from 28kWh to 50kWh. Tesla, BYD and Alpha ESS each make home batteries, and a quote should give the model, its usable capacity and whether it can keep chosen circuits running in a blackout.

EV chargers are simplest to fit in newer homes where the garage sits beside the switchboard. A single phase 7kW charger, which runs on the ordinary supply most houses have, close to a board with free positions usually costs $1,300 to $2,000, and a long cable run or a board upgrade can lift that to $3,000 or more. Zappi and Wallbox each make home EV chargers, and Tesla makes the Wall Connector, so ask for the charger model by name on the quote. Before an EV charger installation is priced, the electrician needs a photo of the board and the distance from the board to the parking spot.

System Price Range Ergon Sign-off Ask About
6.6kW rooftop solar $4,800 - $8,500 Yes Panel model and cyclone rated mounting
Replacement inverter $1,400 - $3,600 Sometimes Brand and a shaded, sheltered spot
Emergency backstop Part of 10kVA and larger systems Yes Combined inverter capacity
Home battery with backup Varies after the discount Yes Usable kWh and backed up circuits
7kW single phase EV charger $1,300 - $3,000 No Cable length and free board space

Licences, Certificates and Complaints in Queensland

The Electrical Safety Office handles electrical licensing in Queensland, and checking a licence before you book protects you from unlicensed operators. A business that quotes and signs contracts for electrical work must hold an electrical contractor licence, and each worker doing the wiring needs an electrical work licence. The online licence search confirms both in a minute or two, and the contractor licence number belongs on every quote. Anyone installing or servicing air conditioning also needs a refrigerant handling licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council. Electrical work by unlicensed homeowners is illegal in Queensland, even a job as small as replacing a light switch.

After testing an installation job, the contractor must hand over a certificate of testing and compliance as soon as possible once the work is complete. It records the work and the contractor's licence details, and the contractor has to keep a copy for five years. Store your copy with the house papers, since buyers, insurers and later electricians may want to see it. Every installation must meet AS/NZS 3000, the Australian and New Zealand wiring rules published by Standards Australia. A generator connection must also comply with AS/NZS 3010, which covers electricity generating sets. If no certificate arrives, request it in writing from the contractor without delay.

Take safety hazards, unlicensed work and dangerous workmanship to the Electrical Safety Office. Disputes over money or the contract can be lodged with the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, normally after you have put the complaint to the contractor in writing. False advertising, misleading product claims and high pressure sales can be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. A fallen powerline or a building that gives electric shocks is an emergency, so keep well away, keep others back and call 000. Note the dates, names and details of every call about a complaint, because each of these bodies works from a written record.

What to Look Out For in a Mackay Electrical Quote

Most disputes over electrical work start with an item missing from the quote, not with the price itself. Look for labour written as an hourly rate with an expected number of hours, and for every material named by brand and model. Jobs outside the city should show travel separately, and farm or acreage work should show trenching as its own line. On an older house, check that the quote says whether a safety switch must be fitted first and whether anyone has tested for asbestos. Outdoor jobs should describe the brackets and screws, stating whether they are stainless steel or galvanised.

The biggest jumps between a quote and the final bill come from switchboards and rewires given a fixed price before anyone inspected them. Quotes for air conditioning, pool and EV charger circuits should confirm that the board and supply can carry the added load. Solar and battery quotes should list the panels, inverter and battery by model, give the usable capacity and mention Ergon approval. For a unit, look for a note on body corporate approval and who will arrange access to common areas.

Gaps and Warning Signs

A complete quote includes
Labour written as an hourly rate plus the hours expected.
Every switch, alarm, fan, inverter and charger listed by brand and model.
A separate travel line for the valley, Sarina or the Whitsunday towns.
Stainless steel or galvanised fixings for outdoor gear near the coast.
Asbestos removal priced on its own line where an old board is replaced.
Ergon or retailer steps listed for meter, solar or supply changes.
The certificate of testing and compliance included in the price.

Be wary of a firm switchboard price quoted by phone before anyone has seen the board.

Be wary of anyone who will not give a licence number or wants cash before paperwork.

After a cyclone, be cautious about door to door offers of electrical repairs. Check the licence number with the Electrical Safety Office before agreeing to any work.

Getting Comparable Mackay and Whitsundays Electrical Quotes

Quotes only line up properly when every electrician has been given the same facts about the job. Tell each one the suburb or town, whether the house is raised timber, lowset block or newer brick, roughly how old it is and whether it is rented or in a body corporate. Explain the result you want, like cooling two bedrooms or getting power to a shed, and leave the choice of equipment to them. Include a photo of the open switchboard and one of each area where work is needed, and for farm jobs give the approximate distance from the house to the shed or pump. When everyone receives the same brief, the prices that come back can be set side by side.

Three written quotes are enough for most jobs bigger than a single fixed price item. Timing counts too, since electricians are busiest just before summer and in the weeks after a cyclone or big storm, when emergency calls take priority. Booking air conditioning circuits, surge protection and generator inlets between May and October usually gets work started sooner. Prices for hiring an electrician in Townsville and North Queensland make a fair check, because Townsville homes face the same cyclone season and the same Ergon network. To the south, hiring an electrician in Rockhampton and Capricornia shows how Central Queensland prices compare for switchboard and air conditioning work. If a hot water, tank or pump job also needs a plumber, ask for the plumbing part as its own line and compare it with the Queensland plumber pricing guide.

Mackay and Whitsundays Electrician FAQ

How much does an electrician cost per hour in Mackay in 2026?
Most Mackay electricians charge between $95 and $150 an hour during normal working hours. Expect a minimum charge of $110 to $200 for the first period on site, even when the job is quick. After hours attendance usually costs $210 to $520 before any work starts. Jobs up the Pioneer Valley or on outlying farms may add a travel fee, and a contractor based in the Whitsundays is usually the cheaper choice for jobs in those towns.
Do I need to upgrade my smoke alarms before 2027?
Yes, every existing home in Queensland needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. The alarms must comply with AS 3786-2014 and be fitted on every storey, in every bedroom and in hallways that lead to bedrooms. They can be hardwired by a licensed electrician or use a non-removable ten year battery. Clipsal, Brooks and Red Smoke Alarms all make interconnected models of both kinds. A three bedroom home usually costs $900 to $1,800 to bring up to the standard.
Why does the same job cost more in a lowset block home?
Concrete block walls have no hollow space for new cable to pass through. The electrician has to run the cable in a surface cover, cut a groove into the block or bring it down from a low roof space. In a raised timber home, the cable can usually come up from under the floor with very little cutting. That difference is why a power point costing $180 to $350 in a raised home can cost $260 to $470 in a lowset block home.
What does a switchboard upgrade cost in Mackay?
A safety switch added to a board with spare positions usually costs $340 to $800. A partial upgrade runs $850 to $2,100, and a full replacement runs $1,450 to $3,800. Boards from before about 1990 may sit on an asbestos backing panel, and licensed removal adds $550 to $1,800. Clipsal, Hager and ABB all make the parts used in new boards, so ask which brand each quote uses.
How should I prepare my electrics for cyclone season?
Have an electrician check outdoor air conditioner brackets, external lights and power point covers for rust or damage before 1 November. A surge protection device at the switchboard costs $300 to $650 and helps protect appliances from voltage spikes. If you rely on a generator during outages, have a licensed electrician fit an inlet and a fixed changeover switch. Test every safety switch with its test button before the wet season begins.
Can I run my house from a generator during a power outage?
You can, but only through a fixed changeover switch fitted by a licensed electrician. Plugging a generator into a power point can send power back into the street lines and injure Ergon crews. An inlet and changeover switch usually cost $800 to $1,900, depending on the circuits covered. Honda makes portable inverter generators that can be connected this way for home backup. Always run a generator outdoors, well away from doors and windows.
Who looks after the power poles on my cane farm?
A pole inside your boundary that carries power only to your own buildings is usually a private property pole. The landholder must keep them and their lines safe, using a licensed electrical contractor for any repairs. Ergon and the Electrical Safety Office both recommend a safety inspection every five years. Ergon's own poles carry a pole number about 2.4 metres above the ground, which helps you tell them apart.
What electrical rules apply to rentals and holiday units?
The power point circuits in a rental must have an approved safety switch, fitted within 90 days of a tenancy starting if one is missing. Smoke alarms must already be interconnected and photoelectric, and landlords must test and clean them within 30 days before each tenancy. In a unit block, wiring inside the lot is usually the owner's job while common areas belong to the body corporate. Check the community management statement before booking work near shared property.
Is there a discount on home batteries in 2026?
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program gives an upfront discount on eligible batteries paired with solar. Since 1 May 2026, the full rate applies to the first 14kWh of usable capacity, with smaller rates for larger batteries. The battery must be able to join a virtual power plant, a program that lets a retailer draw on many home batteries at once, although signing up to one is optional. Tesla, BYD and Alpha ESS all make home batteries, so ask each installer which model they are quoting and how much it can store.
Where do I complain about electrical work in Queensland?
Report safety risks, unlicensed work and dangerous workmanship to the Electrical Safety Office. Contract and payment disputes can go to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal after you have raised them in writing. Problems with supply, metering or bills go to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland once Ergon or your retailer has had a chance to fix them. Misleading sales claims can be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Prices are estimates based on typical Mackay and Whitsundays electrical rates in 2026. Quotes move with whether the house is a raised timber home, a lowset concrete block home, a newer brick veneer home or a unit in a body corporate, what the existing switchboard can take, whether an asbestos backing panel is present, how many air conditioners and other large loads the home runs, how exposed the site is to salt spray and cyclone winds, how far the electrician travels to the valley or the Whitsunday towns, and whether a rural job needs trenching, private pole work or Ergon network changes. Compare written quotes that separate labour, named materials, travel, trenching, asbestos removal, outdoor fixings and Ergon or retailer steps, and that confirm the certificate of testing and compliance.
