Rockhampton and Capricornia Electrical Price Guide
These are typical ranges for household electrical work across Central Queensland. Your price moves with whether cable can run under a high set floor or has to go through a slab home's roof, the age of the switchboard, any asbestos in the old panel, flood or storm damage, and the distance from the electrician's depot to your town or farm.

Electricians around Central Queensland price a job mainly on how high the house sits off the ground, whether it has had flood or storm damage and how far they have to drive. In Rockhampton's older suburbs many homes are high set timber houses on tall stumps, so an electrician can often run new cable through the open space under the floor, while newer estates in Gracemere and Norman Gardens sit on concrete slabs that force cable through the roof and down the walls. Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast near Shoalwater Bay in February 2015 and caused structural damage in Yeppoon and across Rockhampton, so ask any electrician quoting on a board upgrade to price surge protection and a generator inlet as well. When the Fitzroy River floods, any home where water has reached the wiring needs testing by a licensed electrician before the power can be reconnected. Gladstone grew quickly after its alumina refinery began production in 1967, and many homes from that period of growth still run original wiring and small switchboards. Further inland, homes and farms around Emerald and Biloela depend on long rural lines, bore pumps and sheds that a town house never needs. Ergon Energy owns the network across the whole region and must approve every new connection, solar system and supply change, which adds lead time to those jobs. Post your job on The Quote Yard and we will connect you with licensed electricians across Rockhampton and Capricornia who can quote on it.

What Pushes a Central Queensland Electrical Bill Up
What Electrical Work Costs Around Rockhampton and Central Queensland
Licensed electricians around Rockhampton usually charge between $95 and $145 an hour during business hours, and the first visit carries a call-out or minimum charge of $120 to $200. Those rates are close to what households pay in other regional Queensland cities, so the hourly figure alone rarely explains a big gap between two invoices. Far more of the difference comes from how the house is built, how old its switchboard is and how long the drive from the depot takes. Cable can often be pulled through the open space under a high set house in Allenstown in a few minutes, while the same circuit in a Gracemere slab home may take an hour in a hot roof space. The same applies to most jobs on the Queensland electrical services hub, where cable access and the state of the board set the final figure.
Capricornia covers a very large area, and prices differ between its main centres mostly because of travel. Rockhampton and Gracemere have the biggest pool of electricians and the shortest waiting times. Many city contractors also count Yeppoon and Emu Park on the Capricorn Coast as part of their usual area. Gladstone has its own electrical firms, which matters because it is more than an hour south of Rockhampton by road. Emerald in the Central Highlands and Biloela in the Callide Valley also have local contractors, and hiring one of them is usually cheaper than paying for a long return trip from the coast. Mount Morgan, Moura and the smaller Highlands towns often attract a travel fee, depending on where the nearest contractor is based.
Rockhampton and Capricornia Electrical Prices by Job
Electricians in this region are booked most heavily at two times of year. The months before the wet season bring a rush of surge protection, ceiling fan and air conditioning circuits, and the weeks after a cyclone or flood are taken up with safety checks, testing and repairs. Smoke alarm upgrades are also heavily booked through late 2026, because the statewide deadline for every home falls on 1 January 2027. Landlords add a steady flow of safety switch and smoke alarm checks between tenancies. The table below sets out 2026 price bands for common household jobs across the region.
When two quotes for the same job sit far apart, the cable route is usually the first reason. A high set timber home with open space underneath is far quicker to wire than a slab home where the electrician has to work from a cramped roof space. The board is the other common reason, since one that is already full can turn a single new circuit into a replacement. Since 1 January 2025, Queensland law has also required workers to switch off the power at the main switchboard before entering a domestic roof space, so roof work now comes with a short planned outage. Grouping several jobs into one roof visit keeps both the labour and the time without power to a minimum.
| Job | Typical Price | Charged As | Main Variable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour rate, weekdays | $95 - $145 per hour | Hourly | Firm size and licence classes |
| Call-out or first hour | $120 - $200 | Flat fee | Distance from the depot |
| Night or weekend call-out | $220 - $520 | Flat fee before labour | Sunday or public holiday loading |
| Extra power point, high set home | $180 - $360 | Quoted price | Open or built-in underneath |
| Extra power point, slab home | $240 - $460 | Quoted price | Roof access and wall cavity |
| Halogen to LED (light emitting diode) downlight, each | $70 - $145 | Per light | Number of lights done |
| New switchboard | $1,450 - $3,800 | Quoted after a look | Asbestos panel and circuit count |
| Testing after a flood | $280 - $700 | Flat fee or hourly | Number of circuits affected |
How Electricians Charge and Travel Between Towns
Every first visit attracts a call-out or minimum charge of $120 to $200, even if the repair is finished in a few minutes. After hours call-outs cost $220 to $520 before any work starts, and Sundays and public holidays sit at the top of that band. Once the electrician is on site, extra small tasks are normally charged only for the added time and parts. Keep a list of small faults and hand it over when the electrician comes for a bigger job.
Distance adds more to a bill here than in the south east, because the main towns are spread across a very large area. Most Rockhampton firms do not charge travel within the city, Gracemere or the north side. A trip to the Capricorn Coast may or may not attract a charge, depending on where the business is based. Travel fees of $80 to $280 are common when a city electrician drives to Gladstone, Biloela or Emerald, and some firms bill the hours spent on the road instead. On a farm, the quote should also say whether driving between the house and a distant shed or pump is charged as time on site.

Parts should be listed by brand and type, since a single materials total cannot be checked.
Check whether each figure on the quote includes GST or has it added at the end.
Rewiring High Set, Fibro and Slab Homes
Rockhampton has a large number of high set homes, which are timber or fibro houses raised on tall stumps with a usable space underneath. Older suburbs such as Wandal and Allenstown hold many from the interwar and early post-war years, and parts of the north side have a similar mix. When the space under the house is still open, an electrician can run new cable along the floor joists and up into the walls with very little cutting. A three bedroom high set home of this kind typically rewires for $9,500 to $16,000, depending on the ceiling space and the number of new circuits. Older Queenslanders, the traditional timber houses with wide verandahs, follow much the same pattern.
Many high set houses have since been built in underneath, with rooms, laundries or a garage added at ground level. That change removes the easy cable route and often leaves a second switchboard or a long run of old wiring that earlier owners extended. Fibro brings another problem, because fibre cement sheeting made before the late 1980s may contain asbestos and should not be drilled or cut without precautions. Homes wired before the 1960s may still have rubber insulated cable, which turns brittle with age and is one of the main reasons for a full rewire. Newer brick and lightweight homes in estates such as Norman Gardens and Parkhurst rarely need rewiring, so work there tends to be extra circuits for cooling, solar or an electric vehicle (EV) charger. Ask any electrician quoting a rewire whether patching and painting are included, since repairs to linings are often left out.
| Type of Home | Where You Find It | Full Rewire | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| High set timber, open underneath | Wandal, The Range, Allenstown | $9,500 - $16,000 | Cable runs along exposed joists |
| High set home, built in underneath | Older Rockhampton and Gladstone streets | $12,500 - $19,000 | Lost access and extended old wiring |
| Post-war fibro house | North side Rockhampton, older Gladstone | $10,000 - $17,000 | Asbestos care around the sheeting |
| Brick or block home, 1960s to 1980s | Gladstone, Frenchville, Emerald | $10,500 - $17,500 | Concrete floor and tight roof |
| Modern slab home | Norman Gardens, Parkhurst, Gracemere, Tannum Sands | Rarely needed | Recent cable, new circuits added instead |
| Farmhouse with sheds and pumps | Callide Valley, Highlands, Livingstone hinterland | $11,500 - $23,000 plus travel | Several buildings and long feeds |
Queensland Safety Switch and Smoke Alarm Rules
A safety switch, known in the trade as a residual current device (RCD), shuts off a circuit within milliseconds if electricity leaks to earth, as it would through someone touching a faulty appliance. Queensland has required safety switches in all new homes since 1992. When an older home without one changes hands, the new owner must have a safety switch fitted to the power point circuits within 90 days of taking possession, under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2026. Landlords must also make sure every power point circuit in a rental is protected, and if one is missing when a tenancy starts it must be fitted within 90 days of the start date. In an old fuse board, meeting either rule can mean replacing the board rather than adding a single device. Covering the lighting circuits during the same visit adds little to the cost and is worth asking about.
By 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes need smoke alarms that are both photoelectric and interconnected, and homes being sold or newly leased have had to meet that standard since 1 January 2022. Photoelectric alarms detect smoke with a light sensor, and interconnected means every alarm in the house sounds together when one is triggered. They must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014 and be fitted in every bedroom, in each hallway that leads from the bedrooms to the living areas, and on every storey. A hardwired alarm has to be installed by a licensed electrician, while the ten year sealed battery type can be fitted by the owner, and suitable models are made by Red Smoke Alarms, Brooks and Clipsal. Wireless linking avoids running new cable between rooms during a smoke alarm installation, and the Queensland Fire Department sets out the full placement rules.
| Requirement | Who It Affects | Deadline | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| RCD protecting the power points | Buyer of an older home | Within 90 days of possession | $340 - $800 with board space |
| RCD protecting the power points | Owner letting the home | Within 90 days of the tenancy start | $340 - $800 with board space |
| Linked photoelectric alarms | All homes in the state | 1 January 2027 | $900 - $1,850, three bedrooms |
| Power off before roof entry | Workers entering a domestic roof | In force from 1 January 2025 | No direct cost, short outage |
| Certificate of testing and compliance | Every installation job | Soon after testing | Included in the job |
Switchboards, Asbestos Panels and Meter Boxes
Switchboard work is the largest common electrical bill in the region, and the old box and the panel behind the switches often matter more to the price than the new devices. Adding a safety switch to a board with spare room costs $340 to $800, a partial upgrade runs $880 to $2,050, and a full replacement runs $1,450 to $3,800. Older homes in Rockhampton and Gladstone often still have ceramic fuses, the older rewirable type, on a timber or fibre panel with no space left for modern devices. The breakers and safety switches in a new board come from makers such as ABB, Hager and Clipsal, and a quote should say which brand and how many devices are included. Any switchboard upgrade price should state how many spare positions will be left for future circuits.
Panels fitted before about 1990 can contain asbestos, so a good electrician will check before drilling or cutting anything near one. Removal by a licensed asbestos removalist usually adds $550 to $1,850, and it belongs on its own line in the quote. The removalist's work is a separate asbestos removal job, and the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency explains why homes built before 1990 should be checked before anyone drills into them. Moving or replacing a meter box involves Ergon, because the service line coming into the property belongs to the network, and meter changes are organised through your retailer. Three phase supply, which brings three live wires into the house instead of the usual one so it can run bigger loads, costs about $3,000 to $9,500 to add where the street network can take it. Before ordering ducted air conditioning, a large workshop or a fast EV charger, have the electrician confirm the supply can carry it.
| Switchboard or Supply Job | Typical Price | Needs Ergon | Price Depends On |
|---|---|---|---|
| One RCD added to a board with space | $340 - $800 | No | Room left in the box |
| Whole board replaced | $1,450 - $3,800 | Sometimes | Mains cable and number of circuits |
| Asbestos panel taken out | $550 - $1,850 | No | Panel size and removalist fees |
| Board raised above flood height | $1,900 - $5,500 | Often | New position and meter changes |
| Three phase connection added | $3,000 - $9,500 | Yes | Street capacity and network work |
Ergon Energy, Tariffs and Who Owns What
Ergon Energy runs the electricity network across all of Queensland outside the south east, including every town on this page. It is part of Energy Queensland, a company owned by the state government, and its network business is separate from Ergon Energy Retail, which sends most regional households their bills. Ergon owns the poles, the street lines and the service line to your property, and everything on the house side of the connection is the owner's to maintain. If the neighbours are also without power, the fault is almost certainly on Ergon's side and costs you nothing to fix.
Regional households pay prices close to those in the south east, because the state government funds the gap between the regulated price and the real cost of supplying power across such a large area. That payment goes to Ergon Energy Retail as a community service obligation, and the Queensland Competition Authority sets the regulated prices each year. Hot water and pool pumps can run on cheaper economy tariffs that supply power only at set times: tariff 31 guarantees at least eight hours of supply a day and tariff 33 at least eighteen, with off times that vary. A new hot water unit or solar system can make a different tariff the better choice, so raise it with the electrician before any meter wiring changes. Rheem and Stiebel Eltron both make heat pump water heaters, and Ergon lists heat pumps of 270 litres or more among the systems allowed on tariff 33. Unresolved billing, connection or supply complaints can go to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland, a free service.

Air Conditioning, Ceiling Fans and Hot Water
Air conditioning is a large electrical load in most Central Queensland homes for much of the year. A reverse cycle split system, which heats and cools through an indoor wall unit and an outdoor compressor, usually gets a dedicated circuit back to the switchboard, and that electrical work typically runs $320 to $780 depending on cable length and board space. Split and ducted systems from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu each come with an installation manual that states the circuit size required. Outdoor units near the beach at Yeppoon or Emu Park face salt air, so ask whether the quote includes a corrosion protected model or coastal treatment where the maker offers one. In a high set home the outdoor unit can sit under the house or on a wall bracket, which keeps it above ground level in a flood-prone street. Each room needs a unit of the right capacity, measured in kilowatts, and the installer should work this out when quoting the split system installation.
Ceiling fans remain a cheap way to keep rooms comfortable and to reduce how long the air conditioner runs. Mounting a fan where a light already hangs usually costs $160 to $330 on top of the fan itself, and adding a new point with a wall controller costs more in a slab home. Fanco and Hunter Pacific both make ceiling fans, including DC (direct current) motor models, which are quieter and draw less power than the older AC (alternating current) type. Verandah fans need an outdoor rating, so say where each fan will hang when booking a ceiling fan installation.
Ducted air conditioning needs more planning, because a whole-house system can need a larger switchboard or a three phase supply. The electrical part of a ducted air conditioning installation quote should spell out the circuit rating and its breaker. Replacing an electric hot water tank also involves an electrician, since the circuit, the isolator (the switch beside the unit that cuts its power) and the tariff wiring have to suit the new unit. Reclaim Energy and iStore both make heat pump water heaters, and wiring one to an economy tariff can cut running costs in a house that uses a lot of hot water. The plumber connects the water and fits the tempering valve, which mixes cold water in so the hot water at the taps cannot scald, and the rates for that part appear under hiring a plumber in Rockhampton and Capricornia.
| Job | Electrical Cost | New Board Likely | Price Depends On |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated split system circuit | $320 - $780 | Sometimes | Run length and spare board space |
| Ducted unit needing more supply | $4,300 - $11,500 | Yes | Three phase work by Ergon |
| Fan where a light already hangs | $160 - $330 | No | Ceiling height and controls |
| Fan on a new point with wall controller | $290 - $560 | No | High set floor or slab roof route |
| Heat pump hot water, wiring and tariff | $300 - $750 | Rarely | Existing circuit and meter wiring |
Cyclones, Storms and Surge Protection
Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast near Shoalwater Bay on 20 February 2015 as a category 5 system, the most intense rating on the Bureau of Meteorology scale. Roofs and walls were torn from homes around Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast, Rockhampton suffered structural damage across the city, and more than 60,000 homes across Yeppoon, Rockhampton and Bundaberg lost power. For electricians, the aftermath meant wet switchboards, broken outdoor fittings, damaged connections to houses and solar systems that had to be checked before they could run again. Summer thunderstorms bring smaller versions of the same problems most years, with lightning surges that damage inverters, air conditioner control boards and appliances. Roof and structural repairs belong under storm damage repairs, but the electrical job begins with a safety check of the board and anything that got wet or broken.
Fitting a surge protection device, also known as a surge diverter, at the main board costs $320 to $680, and it limits the voltage spikes that run along the network in storms. Surge protection modules from Schneider Electric and Hager mount on the same rail as the safety switches. It cannot stop a direct lightning strike, but surges from nearby strikes and network faults are far more common. If a new board is planned anyway, ask for the surge and lightning protection to be included in the same quote. For households that want backup power during a long outage, a generator inlet with a changeover switch costs about $850 to $1,950 installed. The changeover switch disconnects the house from Ergon's lines before the generator takes over, and Honda is one maker of portable generators that can be used with this kind of setup.

Fitzroy Floods and Getting the Power Back On
The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton has passed its major flood level twice since 2010. The Bureau of Meteorology records a peak of 9.2 metres in January 2011 and about 8.9 metres in April 2017, when the rain from Cyclone Debbie pushed the river up, while the highest on record is 10.11 metres in 1918. In Emerald, the Nogoa River peaked at 15.4 metres in January 2008 and set a record of about 16 metres over the summer of 2010 and 2011. Water that reaches power points, under-house wiring or a switchboard leaves silt and moisture behind, and that can cause shocks or fires once the power returns. That is why the electrical work after a flood has to follow a set order.
The Electrical Safety Office says that after flood or storm damage, a licensed electrician must test the installation before the power can be reconnected. Where an Ergon crew has already left an electricity defect report, the contractor signs it once repairs are done, and otherwise the contractor completes a certificate of testing and compliance before Ergon reconnects the home. Hardwired appliances such as air conditioners and stoves that went under water need a safety check before use, and solar and battery systems need inspection by a licensed contractor before they are switched back on. Small wet appliances such as kettles, toasters and televisions should be thrown out or repaired by a licensed electrician.
A post-flood inspection and test for a typical house runs about $280 to $700, and repairs are priced once the damage is known. Wet power points, light switches and under-house cabling are often replaced rather than dried, especially where mud has got inside. Insurers may ask for the electrician's report and the test certificate, so keep copies with your claim. Walls should be dried out through water and flood damage restoration before any new wiring is closed into them. If you are rebuilding in a low-lying street, ask whether the switchboard, power points and under-house circuits can be moved higher so the next flood does less harm.
After a Flood, Step by Step
Photograph the water line and any damaged fittings before cleaning up, because insurers often ask for them.
Farms, Pumps, Sheds and Private Poles
Acreage around Gracemere and farms near Biloela and Emerald bring jobs that a suburban house never needs. Bores, tank pressure pumps, stock troughs, machinery sheds and workshops each need cable sized for the distance, usually laid underground in conduit, a protective plastic pipe. Undersized cable loses voltage over a long run, which can stop a pump motor starting or make it overheat. Wiring a bore or tank pressure pump typically runs $700 to $2,450, and a sub board, meaning a small second switchboard in the shed, plus its supply cable runs $1,250 to $4,600. Ask for the cable size and trench length in writing, because those two figures decide most of the price.
Power poles on a rural block can belong to the landholder rather than to Ergon. Ergon's own poles carry a pole number about 2.4 metres above the ground, so a pole on your land without one is likely to be private. The landowner must keep a private pole and its lines safe and pay for any defects to be fixed. Ergon recommends a safety inspection at least every five years by a qualified electrical contractor. Look for leaning, rot or termites at the base, rust, and split or sagging crossarms, the bars at the top that hold the wires, but only ever inspect from the ground. Trees growing into private lines should be trimmed by a qualified arborist, never by the owner.
Replacing, moving or undergrounding a private pole requires paperwork that your contractor lodges with Ergon. Converting an overhead private line to underground cable ends the pole maintenance, though trenching costs climb quickly over long distances or rocky ground. A new shed is the cheapest time to plan its power, because conduit can go in before the slab is poured, so give the builder the cable route early in the shed and garage construction. Pump and tank plumbing is a separate trade with its own rates, which are listed in the Queensland plumber pricing guide.
| Farm Job | Typical Price | Needs Ergon | Biggest Variable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bore or tank pump wiring | $700 - $2,450 | No | Metres of trench and cable gauge |
| Shed sub board with supply cable | $1,250 - $4,600 | No | Run length and the tools it will power |
| Five yearly pole check | $260 - $620 | No | How many poles and how far away |
| Private line moved underground | $4,000 - $15,500 | Yes | Trench distance and rock |
| Generator inlet with changeover | $850 - $1,950 | No | Which circuits it backs up |
Rental Homes and Landlord Duties
Landlords carry electrical duties that owner occupiers do not, starting with a safety switch on every power point circuit. The Electrical Safety Act 2002 also places a general duty on owners and their managing agents to keep a rental electrically safe for the people living in or visiting it. Under tenancy law a dangerous electrical fault is an emergency repair, and the agreement has to list who the tenant rings for one. If a tenant feels a tingle from a tap or other metal fitting, they should keep clear of it and contact Ergon as well as the emergency contact.
Queensland's minimum housing standards apply to every rental home, and they require supplied fixtures, fittings and appliances to be kept in good working order and safe to use. Rental smoke alarms already have to be the interconnected photoelectric type, with the landlord testing and cleaning each alarm during the 30 days before a tenancy begins. Tenants must then test and clean them at least once every twelve months. One electrician visit between tenancies can check the safety switches, test the alarms and fix small faults in a single trip. The Electrical Safety Office publishes guidance for property owners and managers, including how often to test safety switches.
Landlord Checklist Between Tenants
Entry to test safety switches during a tenancy needs the proper notice to the tenant.
Power Points, Lighting and Fault Finding
The price of a new power point depends mostly on where the cable can travel. Under a high set timber floor, an extra outlet on a circuit that is already there costs about $180 to $360, because the electrician can bring the cable up into the wall from underneath. In a slab home it has to be dropped from the roof down the inside of the wall, which lifts the price to $240 to $460. HPM, Clipsal and Schneider Electric each make power points and switch plates in several ranges, so name the range you want when booking a power point installation.
Lighting jobs get cheaper per light when several are done together, since one call-out covers them all. Swapping old halogen downlights for LED (light emitting diode) fittings costs $70 to $145 each and reduces heat in the roof space, which helps where insulation sits close to the lights. Near the beach at Yeppoon and Tannum Sands, outdoor lights and power points corrode faster, so fittings with a high weather rating and stainless or marine grade parts last longer. Mercator and Brilliant both make LED downlights and outdoor light fittings. Sensor lights on sheds, driveways and under-house areas help on bigger blocks where the yard is dark at night. Each fitting in an outdoor lighting installation should have its IP (ingress protection) rating, the code for dust and water resistance, written on the quote.
Fault finding is billed by the hour, because the time needed to trace a fault is unknown at the start. A first hour of $150 to $300 is typical, and a good contractor will give a written estimate before going further. In older Rockhampton and Gladstone homes, common causes include brittle rubber-insulated cable, worn terminals in old fuse boards and rainwater inside outdoor fittings. A safety switch that trips every time it rains often points to moisture in an outdoor light, a garden power point or a buried joint. Call an emergency electrician at once for a burning smell, a scorched outlet or a main switch that will not reset, and book electrical fault finding for faults that come and go.
Small Job Prices, High Set or Slab
Jot down the time of each fault and which appliances were on, since that helps the electrician narrow it down.
Solar, Batteries and EV Chargers
Solar panels in this region are often mounted on sheds as well as houses, which can mean a longer cable run back to the switchboard. A typical 6.6kW (kilowatt) system costs about $4,900 to $8,600 installed after the federal discount, which comes from small-scale technology certificates that the installer claims and deducts from your price under rules run by the Clean Energy Regulator. The inverter turns the panels' direct current into the alternating current the house uses, and Fronius, Sungrow and Enphase are among the makers of home inverters. On this coast, panel frames and mounting rails have to suit the wind loads for the site, so ask the installer to confirm the racking is rated for cyclone conditions. No system can connect until Ergon approves it, and some long rural lines carry a cap on exports. Storm-damaged panels and rails are a solar panel repairs job, while a new solar panel installation is priced on panel count, inverter size and roof access.
Queensland requires an emergency backstop device on new or upgraded solar systems where the total inverter capacity on site is 10kVA (kilovolt-amperes) or more. The device gives the network a way to turn off solar exports if the grid is under stress, and Ergon has required it for connections agreed since 6 February 2023. Ergon leaves inverters that only run a battery out of that 10kVA count. Ask whether a planned system crosses that threshold, since it adds parts and paperwork.
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has given an upfront discount on eligible home batteries since 1 July 2025, provided an accredited installer fits them. From 1 May 2026 the discount was cut and tiered by size, with the full rate applying to the first 14kWh of usable capacity and a smaller rate per kilowatt hour above that. A grid-connected battery must be capable of joining a virtual power plant, meaning a program that lets a retailer use many home batteries together, but signing up is your choice. Tesla Powerwall, BYD and Alpha ESS are all home battery ranges, and the quote should name the model, the usable capacity and the warranty. If you want the battery to keep the fridge and fans running during a cyclone outage, confirm the quote includes a backup function and lists the circuits it covers.
An attached garage close to the switchboard keeps the cost of an EV charger down. A 7kW single phase charger mounted close to a board with free space costs $1,350 to $2,050, while a long run or a new board can take it to $3,100 or beyond. Three phase chargers at homes without three phase supply can cost $5,500 to $14,500 once Ergon's work is included. Zappi, Wallbox and Tesla all make home EV chargers, and the quote should name the model and its charging rate. Long distances between towns make home charging important for EV owners in Emerald or Biloela, so plan the charger together with the rest of the supply. Where the house has no three phase supply, an EV charger installation quote should say whether a single phase charger would cover your daily driving.
| System | Typical Price | Ergon Sign-Off | Question to Ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rooftop solar, 6.6kW | $4,900 - $8,600 | Yes | Is the racking rated for cyclones? |
| Backstop for 10kVA and larger | Built into the system price | Yes | What is the total inverter size? |
| Home battery with backup | Depends on the federal discount | Yes | Which circuits stay on in an outage? |
| 7kW charger, single phase | $1,350 - $3,100 | No | How far is the board from the garage? |
| Charger needing three phase | $5,500 - $14,500 | Yes | How long will Ergon's work take? |
Licences, Certificates, Emergencies and Complaints
Queensland electricians are licensed through the Electrical Safety Office, and checking a licence takes a couple of minutes. Two licences matter, because the firm signing the contract needs an electrical contractor licence while each worker on the tools needs an electrical work licence. The office runs a free online licence search, and any quote you receive should carry the contractor's licence number. Anyone installing or servicing air conditioning also needs a refrigerant handling licence, issued through the Australian Refrigeration Council. Householders are not allowed to do their own electrical work in Queensland, and that includes swapping a light fitting.
Once installation work has been tested, you are entitled to a certificate of testing and compliance from the contractor as soon as possible. It records who the work was done for, what was tested, the test date and the contractor's licence number, along with a statement that the work is electrically safe and meets the wiring rules. Those rules are AS/NZS 3000, published by Standards Australia, and every installation in the state must comply with them. File the certificate with the house papers, because a future buyer, your insurer or the next electrician may want to see it. After a flood or cyclone, testing paperwork of this kind is what allows Ergon to reconnect the home. If the contractor leaves without providing one, ask for it in writing.
In an emergency such as a fallen powerline, a fire at the switchboard or a person receiving a serious shock, call 000 first and keep everyone well clear. Report unsafe or unlicensed work to the Electrical Safety Office once everyone is safe. Disputes over money or the contract can be taken to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal after you have put the complaint in writing, and false advertising or high pressure sales can be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Problems with supply, meters or bills go to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland if Ergon or the retailer has not resolved them.
What to Look Out For in a Rockhampton Electrical Quote
A quote that leaves things out causes more arguments later on than one that is simply expensive. Labour should be shown as a rate and the expected hours, with each material listed by brand and model instead of being lumped together. A switchboard quote should name the maker of the circuit breakers and safety switches, such as Schneider Electric, Hager or ABB, and state how many circuits are protected. A job outside the electrician's own town should show travel separately, and farm work should give a price per metre of trench. In an older home, the quote should say whether asbestos has been checked and whether a safety switch upgrade is needed before other work can start. For flood or storm repairs, confirm that the testing, the certificate and any insurance report are included.
Final bills tend to rise when a rewire or new board was given a fixed sum by someone who never saw the house. Nobody can tell what is hidden in a 1950s high set house, or behind its original fuse panel, until the electrician opens things up. For air conditioning, pumps and EV chargers, the quote should state that the existing board and supply have enough capacity. For solar and batteries, it should name the panels, inverter, battery and backup function, confirm the wind rating of the mounting, and mention Ergon approval. A quote with all of this written down is much easier to compare against the others.
Missing Items and Red Flags
Treat a firm switchboard price given by phone, without a photo or visit, with caution.
Walk away from anyone who avoids giving a licence number or asks for cash first.
Getting Comparable Rockhampton Electrical Quotes
Send every electrician the same details, because prices built on different information cannot be compared fairly. Tell them the town or suburb, how the house sits (high set, built in below or on a slab), roughly when it was built, and whether it is rented or has flooded. Explain the result you are after, for example a cooler main bedroom or power at the shed pump, and let the electrician suggest how to get there. Send pictures of the switchboard with the cover open and of each spot where work is needed, plus the rough distances involved on a rural block.
Collect three quotes for anything larger than a simple fixed price job such as a single fan. If one is far cheaper than the rest, find out what it leaves out before treating it as the best deal. Timing also affects price and availability, since electricians across Central Queensland are busiest just before the wet season and straight after a big storm or flood. Booking air conditioning circuits, surge protection and smoke alarms in winter or early spring usually means a quicker start. Statewide ranges in the Queensland electrician pricing guide help show whether a regional quote is unusually high or low.
Neighbouring regions offer another way to test a Central Queensland price. Ergon arrangements and cyclone exposure are similar on the coast to the north, which is covered by hiring an electrician in Mackay and the Whitsundays. Hiring an electrician in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs shows prices in an inland centre with long rural drives, and hiring an electrician in North Queensland adds Townsville's figures for a tropical city. Looking at two or three regions shows which costs are local, such as travel and flood repairs, and which are the same almost everywhere.
