Hire a Handyman Ipswich and Lockyer Valley QLD - Get Local Quotes

Handyman work around Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley covers three quite different kinds of home. Older timber cottages near the Ipswich city centre have board walls, hardwood floors and decades of paint, so a simple door or window repair can uncover rot, termite damage or lead paint. Newer homes in Springfield, Redbank Plains and the Ripley Valley are brick veneer or lightweight clad homes on concrete slabs, where the jobs are fixings into plasterboard, blinds, shelving and small defects. Out along the Warrego Highway toward Gatton and Laidley, and up the Brisbane Valley Highway to Esk, acreage owners want farm gates rehung, shed doors freed and tank stands checked. Floods on the Bremer River and Lockyer Creek in 2011 and 2022 damaged homes across the region, and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority has since published guidance on materials that cope better with floodwater. A handyman can take on small building work valued at $3,300 or less, while electrical, plumbing, chemical termite treatment and structural stump work must go to licensed trades. Houses built before 1990 can also contain asbestos sheeting, so the age of a home affects how a handyman drills, cuts and quotes. The prices on this page are 2026 estimates for normal working hours, and they overlap the Queensland and Brisbane handyman bands, with a travel fee added for the valley towns. Post your job on The Quote Yard and we will connect you with local handymen across Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley who can quote on it.

What Lifts a Handyman Bill in This Region

What is involved
Travel time to the valley towns is billed as a fee or as hourly time on the road.
Old timber profiles and hardware take longer to match than modern stock parts.
Hidden termite or flood damage behind trim can turn a small repair into a larger one.
Any part of the job that needs a licence goes to a separate trade with its own call-out.
Group your jobs into one numbered list with photos, so a single minimum charge and travel fee cover as much work as possible.

Odd Jobs and Repairs Between Springfield and Esk

Handymen working across Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley charge roughly $65 to $105 an hour, with a minimum charge of $90 to $170 that covers the first hour or a short visit. That minimum charge, sometimes called a call-out fee, pays for the drive, parking and setting up, so fixing one loose hinge costs nearly as much as an hour of work. Those figures fall within the hourly band in our Queensland handyman services guide and close to the Brisbane handyman rates. Jobs at homes in Gatton, Laidley, Lowood and Esk can include an extra travel fee because the handyman spends unpaid time on the highway. The prices on this page are for normal weekday hours, and evening or weekend work costs more.

The region takes in parts of four council areas, and each council has its own planning scheme, flood mapping and approval process. Ipswich City Council covers the city, Springfield and the Ripley Valley, while Lockyer Valley Regional Council covers Gatton, Laidley, Plainland and Withcott. Somerset Regional Council looks after Esk, Lowood and Fernvale, and a few southern localities fall within the Scenic Rim. Routine repairs need no council involvement, but a new shed, a tall fence or changes to a heritage place can involve the council. Your rates notice names the council that applies, which saves time when a quote mentions an approval or a flood level.

2026 Handyman Estimates for Ipswich and Valley Homes

Easing a sticking door, swapping a handle or refitting a casement window stay costs about $90 to $260, depending on whether the parts are supplied. Casement windows are the side-hinged timber windows found in older cottages, and their stays are the metal arms that hold them open at a set angle. Skirting is the board along the base of each wall, and architrave is the trim around a door frame. Replacing a damaged run of either costs about $180 to $520 a room once a pest controller has dealt with any termites. Hanging a solid core door in place of a hollow core one costs $380 to $850 with the door supplied. Acreage jobs such as rehanging a farm gate or freeing shed door rollers run from $130 to $400 before travel.

These figures are 2026 estimates, and they overlap the statewide and Brisbane handyman bands for the same kinds of work. Labour rates are close to Brisbane rates, while the valley towns add a travel fee of $40 to $120 a visit when the handyman is based in Ipswich or Toowoomba. Materials are charged at cost plus a margin, and older homes need more of them because hardware and timber profiles have to be matched. Quotes for timber cottages can also include time for stripping paint, finding solid timber to fix into or packing out a frame that is no longer square. Gainsborough makes door handles and locks, Yale makes residential locks, and Bostik makes construction adhesives and sealants. Prices for new estate homes are toward the lower end because walls are straight, hardware is current and replacement parts are easy to buy.

Minimum Charges, Day Bookings and Highway Travel to the Valley

Handymen in this region price work in three ways, using an hourly rate with a minimum charge, a half or full day booking, or a fixed price for a defined job. The minimum charge covers the first hour, so a 20 minute repair and a 60 minute repair cost the same amount. Half day bookings cost about $260 to $480 and full days about $500 to $900, which works out cheaper per hour than several separate visits. Fixed prices suit jobs with a clear scope, such as hanging three doors or replacing a set of window stays.

Jobs in the Lockyer Valley can include a travel cost that jobs near Ipswich may not. Handymen based in Ipswich or Springfield may charge nothing extra nearby, then add $40 to $120 for Gatton, Laidley, Lowood or Esk to cover highway travel time. Some charge travel as a flat fee each way, while others start the hourly rate when they leave the previous job. Handymen who live in the valley may charge no travel at all for nearby farms, so it helps to know where each one is based. Grouping jobs into one visit spreads a single travel fee across more work, and a written list lets the handyman bring the right parts the first time. Return trips for forgotten parts add travel and a second minimum charge, so measurements and photos sent in advance help avoid them.

Repair Jobs Particular to Ipswich Timber Cottages

Older parts of Ipswich, including suburbs close to the city centre, have timber workers' cottages and Queenslanders, the traditional timber houses raised on stumps, and these homes bring their own handyman jobs. Internal walls in these houses are VJ boards, short for vertical joint, which are tongue and groove timber boards with a small V-shaped groove where each pair meets. Split or holed boards can be eased out and replaced, but finding the same width and groove may take a special order from a timber supplier. Hardwood floorboards can be refixed where they lift or squeak, with screws or nails driven into the joists, the timber beams that carry the floor. Casement windows can need new stays or hinges, and double-hung sash windows, with two glass panels that slide up and down, can need new sash cords, the ropes that hold those panels in place. The frames of both kinds of window can swell in humid weather.

Old paint needs care in these homes, because Somerset Regional Council advises that homes and structures built before 1970 may contain high-lead paint hidden under newer layers. The council names window frames, doors, skirting boards, cupboards, gutters and fascias as the likely places to find it. It also says lead paint should never be dry sanded or sandblasted, since the risk rises when the paint is disturbed or flaking. Anyone easing a door or replacing a window stay should use wet scraping, drop sheets and a vacuum with a fine filter, and keep children away from the work area. Larger stripping jobs suit a painter experienced in lead paint removal and in repainting Queenslanders, since both need containment that a short handyman visit does not include. Laboratory testing of a paint chip can confirm whether a layer contains lead before anyone scrapes it.

Heritage Overlays, Character Places and Free Conservation Advice

Ipswich City Council's current planning scheme, the Ipswich City Plan 2025, took effect on 1 July 2025, and planning schemes in Queensland use overlays to flag matters such as flooding and heritage on particular properties. A heritage overlay on a property can mean that some changes to the building need council approval, even when the same work on an unlisted house would not. Places on the Queensland Heritage Register have separate requirements under state law, on top of any council overlay. Routine maintenance with matching materials is the safest kind of handyman work on these houses, while changes to street-facing windows, doors, verandahs or fences should be checked first. The overlays for an address can be looked up through Ipswich City Council before a handyman orders new parts.

The council also runs a Heritage Adviser Service, started in October 1992, which gives owners of historic Ipswich buildings a limited free consultation with a conservation architect by appointment. The adviser usually visits the property, which helps when an owner wants to know whether a rotten verandah post or window can be repaired before it is replaced. That advice can then go to the handyman as part of the job list, so the quote reflects the repair method the adviser suggested. Owners in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset areas should check their own council's planning scheme, since heritage listings and rules differ between councils.

Check the overlay before ordering replacement windows or doors, because custom-made timber windows and doors are hard to return once built.

Stumps, Bearers and Floors That Have Dropped

Older timber houses in Ipswich are raised on stumps, the short posts that hold the house above the ground, and bearers, the heavy beams laid across the stumps, carry the joists and floor. When stumps rot, sink or are eaten by termites, the floor drops and doors start to bind, cracks open in the wall boards and windows jam. Planing a door, which means shaving timber off its edge, or refitting a window only fixes the visible effect while the floor underneath is still moving. Replacing stumps, called restumping, is structural building work, and a whole-house job costs well over the $3,300 limit that applies to unlicensed work. It needs a contractor holding the right Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licence, and a structural engineer may be involved where the frame has moved. Quotes for restumping and a structural inspection are the first step when several doors start sticking at the same time.

Handyman work can be done alongside the licensed job but is not a substitute for it. After a house has been restumped and relevelled, doors may need planing or rehanging, architraves may need refixing and cracked boards may need filling or replacing. Those follow-up jobs suit a handyman, and they can be priced as a separate list once the builder has finished. Subfloor timbers with minor damage, such as a loose batten, a thin strip of timber, or a broken lattice panel around the base of the house, are also handyman work. Anything that holds up the floor, from bearers to the stumps themselves, should be assessed by someone licensed for subfloor repairs.

Termite-Damaged Trim and Doors: Treatment Comes First

Termites eat timber from the inside, so damaged skirting, architraves and door jambs, the upright sides of a door frame, can look sound until a screwdriver goes straight through. Chemical termite treatment is licensed work in Queensland whatever the job costs, because the QBCC lists termite management (chemical) among the licences needed regardless of value. The person doing that work also needs a pest management licence issued by the Department of Health. If live termites turn up, the handyman should stop, leave the timber in place and recommend a termite inspection and treatment, so the pest controller can see the activity before choosing a treatment. Breaking open the damaged timber first makes it harder for the inspector to trace where the termites are getting in.

Repairs come after the treatment has been done and the pest controller has confirmed the activity has stopped. Replacing skirting or architraves means matching the profile, priming the new timber and painting it to match, so a single room can take most of a day. Damage that reaches wall studs, the vertical frame timbers behind the lining, or the floor frame becomes building work for a carpenter or builder. Larger termite damage repairs need a licensed contractor once the value passes $3,300. Keeping the pest controller's report with the handyman's invoice gives a future buyer or insurer a record of what was found and fixed. The quote should also name the replacement timber, such as treated pine or a durable hardwood, so you know what is going back into the wall.

Some small handyman jobs also remove the conditions that termites use to reach a house unseen. Timber steps, garden edging and stacked offcuts that touch the soil beside the walls can give termites a hidden path into the frame. Replacing ground-contact timber with steel, concrete or treated timber rated for that use, and keeping firewood away from the walls, removes some of those paths. Clearing stored items from under a raised house also lets the pest controller see the stumps and bearers properly at the next inspection.

Repairs After the Bremer River and Lockyer Creek Floods

Bureau of Meteorology records for the Bremer River at the Ipswich gauge, on the David Trumpy Bridge, show a peak of 19.40 metres in January 2011 and 16.72 metres in February 2022. The highest flood on record reached 24.50 metres in February 1893, and the bureau notes that more than 7,000 properties are flood-affected once the river passes 19.25 metres. In the Lockyer Valley, the January 2011 flash flood severely damaged Grantham, and part of the town moved to higher ground through a voluntary land swap. According to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), a 935-acre site on a hill above the old town was bought for the swap, and the first houses there were built by Christmas 2011. Handymen quoting on houses in flood-affected streets may therefore find old water damage behind skirting, inside door cores or under floor coverings. Ipswich City Council publishes maps of the 1974, 2011 and 2022 flood extents, which show whether a street was under water before.

After a flood, the handyman is one of the later trades on site. Before power is restored a licensed local electrician checks the wiring, a plumber checks drains and hot water, and the house is cleaned and dried before new linings or trim go in. Businesses that handle water and flood damage restoration can measure moisture in the frame, which tells the handyman when it is safe to close the walls up. Handyman work then covers rehanging or replacing doors, fitting new skirting and architraves, replacing kickboards, the panels along the base of kitchen cupboards, and putting back shelving and fixtures. Insurers may also want to inspect damaged doors and joinery before they are thrown out, so check the claim process before the old items go in a skip.

Flood-Resilient Doors, Skirting and Kickboards for Low-Lying Homes

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority published Flood Resilient Building Guidance for Queensland Homes in February 2019, and several of its strategies are small enough for a handyman to carry out. The guidance suggests swapping hollow core doors for solid core or aluminium and glass doors, but warns that solid core doors with a craftwood core, a type of fibreboard, can still be damaged by water. It recommends water-resistant skirting matched to the floor, such as hardwood on concrete floors, tiles on tiled floors and coved vinyl, which curves up from the floor onto the wall, on vinyl floors. Kitchen cabinets can be fitted with removable kick plates, the panels along the base of the cupboards, so the space underneath can be cleaned out after a flood. Door and window hardware that resists corrosion is another item on the list, since hinges and locks end up under water along with the doors in a flood. The guidance is not mandatory and does not replace the requirements of the Building Act 1975, but it gives owners a checklist to take into a repair quote.

Moving power points above possible flood levels, another strategy in the guidance, is electrical work for a licensed electrician. Disconnecting and reconnecting plumbing so a kitchen or laundry can be raised or replaced must be done by a licensed professional, as the guidance itself notes, which for plumbing means a licensed plumber. Corinthian Doors makes solid core and entrance doors, Hume Doors makes internal and entrance doors, and James Hardie makes fibre cement sheeting. Where several rooms need new doors, internal door installation quotes that list the door model, hinges and any frame repairs are easier to compare.

Item Common Fitting Flood-Resilient Option Ipswich Band

Farm Gates, Shed Doors and Tank Stands on Lockyer Acreage

Farms and lifestyle blocks around Gatton, Laidley, Plainland and Lowood have a different list of handyman jobs from the suburbs. Heavy farm gates can drop on their hinges, steel shed doors can come off their tracks, and timber tank stands weaken as the posts age. A full rainwater tank is heavy, because every 1,000 litres of water weighs about a tonne, so a stand with rotten or leaning posts is a structural problem. Replacing a few platform boards is handyman work, but a carpenter rebuilds the stand and a plumber or tank specialist handles repairs to the tank itself. The QRA flood guidance also recommends anchoring rainwater tanks, which matters on low ground near Lockyer Creek and its tributaries. Gate motors, intercoms and cameras for a farm entrance are separate work for a security installer.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council treats a small shed as self-assessable building work when it covers no more than 10 square metres, stands no more than 2.4 metres high and has no side over 5 metres. Self-assessable means it can go up without a building approval, provided its average (mean) height is no more than 2.1 metres and it meets the building codes and boundary setbacks. Larger farm buildings need approval, with an exception for small Class 10 buildings on farming land where no part is within 200 metres of a road or boundary. Class 10 is the building code class for non-habitable structures such as sheds, carports and garages. Stratco makes steel sheds, gates and fencing, BlueScope makes Colorbond steel, and Lysaght makes steel roofing and walling. Bigger sheds are a job for shed builders once approvals and concrete slabs are involved.

Rural boundary fences follow the Queensland dividing fence rules, under which neighbours share the cost of a sufficient dividing fence. Between two parcels of pastoral land, a sufficient fence must hold the type of livestock grazing on either side, while the rules do not apply between two agricultural parcels. Parts of the Lockyer Valley council area are inside Queensland's fire ant biosecurity zones, so soil, mulch, hay and turf moved off a property have to follow the movement rules. Before digging new post holes, lodge a request with Before You Dig Australia to locate network cables and pipes, and check the farm's own records for private lines running to pumps and sheds.

Fixings, Blinds and Defects in Brand-New Estate Homes

The Ripley Valley was declared a Priority Development Area, a state-planned growth area, on 8 October 2010, and Economic Development Queensland plans for up to 48,750 dwellings and about 131,000 people there. Ipswich City Council assesses development applications in the area against the Ripley Valley Development Scheme. Springfield, Springfield Lakes and Redbank Plains also have streets of recent homes on concrete slabs, built as brick veneer, which is a brick outer wall over a frame, or with lightweight cladding. These homes are like the estates in our handyman guide for Moreton Bay and Redcliffe, and handyman jobs there are mainly fixings such as blinds, curtain rods, shelves, mirrors, television brackets and wardrobe fit-outs. The walls are lined with plasterboard, the gypsum sheet fixed to timber or steel studs, and it holds very little weight on its own.

Before any handyman touches the builder's work, check whether the problem is a defect the builder must fix. Under the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme, cover for a non-structural defect applies if you become aware of it within 6 months of completion and lodge a claim within 7 months. Structural defects are covered for 6 years and 6 months from the contract date, or 7 years where the build took more than 6 months. Any handyman repair to a sticking door or a cracked cornice, the moulding where the wall meets the ceiling, can make it harder to show which faults came from the builder's work. Report the defect to the builder in writing first, then book the handyman for genuine extras such as blinds and curtains or television wall mounting. Fixings should go into studs or use rated anchors, and screws should stay clear of wet area walls where the waterproofing membrane is laid behind the tiles.

Fischer makes nylon wall plugs and chemical anchors, Ramset makes masonry anchors, and Rawlplug makes wall plugs and cavity fixings.

Makita makes cordless drills and impact drivers, and Milwaukee makes cordless power tools.

Use a stud finder or the builder's plans before drilling near power points, since cables can run vertically above and below them.

Emergency Repairs and Fixture Requests in Queensland Rentals

The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) lists the repairs that count as emergencies, including a serious roof leak, flooding or serious flood damage, and any fault or damage that makes the premises unsafe or insecure. A broken external door lock or a window that will not latch can fall into that last group, which makes it urgent work for a handyman or locksmith. If a tenant cannot reach the nominated repairer within a reasonable time, the tenant can arrange emergency repairs costing up to 4 weeks' rent. The tenant then asks in writing to be repaid, with receipts, and the payer has at least 7 days to pay before the tenant can apply urgently to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT). Repairs needed to meet the minimum housing standards are also treated as emergency repairs. Those standards have applied to all tenancies since 1 September 2024, and they require fixtures and fittings in good repair and working locks or latches on external windows and doors.

Tenants who want a change of their own, such as a shelf, a picture hook or a furniture anchor, follow a different process. Since 1 May 2025, a renter asks for a fixture or structural change on an approved form, and the owner has 28 days to decide and should answer in writing. The owner can attach conditions, such as removing the item and repairing the wall when the tenancy ends. Unresolved disputes go to the RTA's free dispute resolution service and then to QCAT, and more detail on rental repairs is in our handyman guide for Logan and the Redlands. Whoever fits an approved fixture should leave a note of the fixing type and position, so the patch-up at the end of the lease is simple.

Smoke alarms are a separate rental duty, and the Queensland Fire Department says landlords must test and clean each alarm within 30 days before a tenancy starts. Every existing home, whether rented or owner-occupied, needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027. Alarms powered by a non-removable 10-year battery can be fitted by a handyman, while hardwired alarms on mains power must be installed by a licensed electrician. Landlords with a mix of old and new smoke alarms should replace them as one interconnected set, since every alarm in the home has to be interconnected with every other alarm.

Window latch not working Minimum housing standard Landlord or agent Replace the latch
Loose cupboard hinge Routine repair Landlord or agent Adjust or replace the hinge

Testing Fibro Sheeting Before Drilling a Post-War House

The QBCC says a house built before 1990 has a good chance of containing some asbestos, and asbestos products were used in some homes until the total ban in 2003. Post-war houses across Ipswich and the valley towns can have fibre cement sheeting, known as fibro, on eaves, bathroom walls, laundry walls and external cladding. Asbestos cannot be identified by sight, so a sample has to be tested by a laboratory before anyone drills, cuts or sands suspect sheeting. You do not need a licence to remove less than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos, where the fibres are held in cement or another binder, but safety precautions and proper disposal still apply. Removing 10 square metres or more of this non-friable type needs a B Class licence, and friable asbestos, which crumbles easily, needs an A Class licence.

Careful handymen ask how old the house is before quoting and check for any asbestos test results before drilling into old sheeting. Where no test has been done, fixings can be moved into timber framing, or the sheet can be sampled first through asbestos testing. Vinyl floor tiles and the backing of old sheet vinyl can also contain asbestos, which matters when floor coverings are lifted to fix the boards underneath. Homeowners can find guides on the Queensland Government's asbestos website, and anything over the 10 square metre limit goes to a licensed asbestos removal contractor.

Job Lists, Contract Levels and Deposit Limits in Queensland

Building work valued at more than $3,300, including labour, materials and goods and services tax (GST), needs a licence from the QBCC. The QBCC says a handyman may not need a licence when the work is no more than $3,300, is not electrical or plumbing work and does not need an occupational licence. Some work needs a licence at any value, including drainage, plumbing and drainage, gas fitting, chemical termite management, fire protection, completed residential building inspections, building design and site classification. Long lists of carpentry repairs in an old cottage can pass $3,300 once materials are added, so the handyman's licence status matters before work begins.

GST is part of the threshold, which matters for owners who compare a quote written before tax with the $3,300 figure. A list priced at $3,100 plus GST comes to $3,410, and at that point the work is over the limit for an unlicensed handyman. Splitting one connected job into separate invoices does not change its total value, so check whether the whole list will pass $3,300 before anyone starts. Where it will, the job can go to a handyman who also holds a QBCC licence, or the licensed parts can be split off to a builder or carpenter. Quotes from small operators should say clearly whether the prices include GST, since a business that is not registered for GST will not add it.

Deposits for building work are also limited by law in Queensland. The maximum deposit is 20 per cent for work of $3,300 or less, 10 per cent for level 1 contracts of $3,301 to $19,999 and 5 per cent for level 2 contracts above $20,000. Deposits of up to 20 per cent are allowed in limited cases where substantial custom work made off site, such as cabinetry or windows, is more than half the contract price. Progress payments have to match the work done, so the QBCC says a contractor cannot claim over half the price, deposit included, before half the on-site work is finished. Residential work over $3,300 by a licensed contractor also brings cover under the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme. Licence numbers can be checked on the QBCC online licence search before any deposit is paid.

Faulty Work, Unfinished Jobs and Queensland Complaint Routes

Start with a written complaint to the handyman that describes the fault, includes photos and sets a reasonable date for a fix. Under the Australian Consumer Law, services must be provided with due care and skill and be fit for any purpose you made known, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission calls these consumer guarantees. For licensed building work, the QBCC can help with defective or incomplete work, and the Home Warranty Scheme may apply where the job was over $3,300. General consumer complaints about unlicensed handyman work can go to the Office of Fair Trading Queensland. If the dispute is still not resolved, QCAT can hear consumer and trader disputes for claims up to $25,000. For a domestic building dispute, QCAT requires the parties to go through the QBCC's dispute resolution process before an application is lodged.

Keep the quote, invoice, before and after photos and any messages about the job together in one place. Dated records make it easier to show whether a door that sticks again was badly hung or whether the house has moved since. For older timber homes, note whether the house was restumped, treated for termites or flooded around the time of the repair. These details also help a second handyman quote on fixing the job, because they show what was tried before. The same complaint routes apply anywhere in Queensland, so an owner with more than one property follows the same steps for each of them.

Details a Handyman Quote Should Spell Out in This Region

Good quotes list each job separately with its own price, instead of one total for a whole page of tasks. They should show the minimum charge, the hourly rate after the first hour, the travel fee for valley towns and how materials are charged. For timber cottages, look for an allowance for matching old profiles, dealing with lead paint and checking for termite damage behind trim. For flood-affected homes, the quote should name the door type and skirting material, so you can check them against the QRA guidance. Any line that involves power points, smoke alarm wiring, taps or drains should name the licensed trade doing it or state that it is excluded.

Be wary of a handyman who offers to restump a corner of the house, treat termites with a spray or move a power point, since each of those needs a licence. Requests for a deposit above the legal limits are another warning sign, as is a refusal to put the price in writing. Quotes far cheaper than the others may leave out travel, materials or the time needed to match old timber. Check that the business holds public liability insurance, and request the certificate if the work involves ladders, roofs or heavy items.

Comparing Handyman Prices Across Ipswich and the Valley

Send every handyman the same numbered list, with a photo of each job, rough measurements and the make of any hardware that needs replacing. Include the suburb or town, the age of the house, whether it is on stumps or a slab, and whether it has flooded or had termites. Mention locked gates, dogs, long driveways and where the handyman can park, since these affect time on site for acreage jobs. Three quotes give a fair comparison for a larger list, while a single booked half day can suit a short list of simple jobs. Find out how long each quote stays valid, whether travel is charged once or each way, and who supplies the materials. Compare the prices job by job as well as the totals, so you can see where one quote leaves something out.

The Quote Yard lets you post one description and receive quotes from local handymen who can all see the same details. For licensed parts of the work, a tiler, plumber or electrician from the region can be booked alongside the handyman so the jobs happen in the right order. Owners who also hold property elsewhere in south east Queensland can compare the local handyman guides for the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Keep the accepted quote and invoice with the house records, along with any QBCC licence number, pest report or asbestos test. Those records make the next repair quicker to price and show a future buyer what has been done.

Ipswich and Lockyer Valley Handyman FAQ

Why does a handyman charge a travel fee to Gatton or Esk?
A handyman based in Ipswich or Springfield spends unpaid time on the Warrego or Brisbane Valley highways to reach the valley towns. That time cannot be billed as labour on your job, so it is recovered as a travel fee of about $40 to $120 a visit in 2026. Some handymen charge it as a flat fee and others charge hourly from the previous job. Grouping several jobs into one visit spreads the fee across more work, and a handyman who lives in the valley may not charge it at all.
Is a half day booking cheaper than paying by the hour?
Half day bookings cost about $260 to $480 and full days about $500 to $900 in 2026 estimates. That works out cheaper per hour than several short visits, because each visit carries its own minimum charge of $90 to $170. Half and full day bookings suit a long list of small jobs spread around the house and yard. For one or two quick repairs, an hourly visit with the minimum charge can be the cheaper choice.
Can a handyman fix doors that started sticking after the floor dropped?
A handyman can plane and rehang the doors, but the fix will not last while the floor underneath keeps moving. When several doors start binding at once in a timber house, the stumps or bearers may have rotted, sunk or been damaged by termites. Restumping is structural building work that needs a QBCC licensed contractor, and a structural inspection can confirm the cause. Book the handyman for doors and trim once the house has been relevelled.
Does a pest controller need to finish before termite-damaged trim is replaced?
Chemical termite treatment needs a QBCC termite management (chemical) licence at any value, plus a pest management licence from the Department of Health. The house should be inspected and treated by a licensed pest controller before any damaged timber is removed. The handyman then replaces skirting, architraves and door jambs once the pest controller confirms the activity has stopped. Damage to studs, bearers or stumps goes to a carpenter or builder.
What does the QRA flood guidance recommend for internal doors?
The Queensland Reconstruction Authority's 2019 Flood Resilient Building Guidance for Queensland Homes suggests replacing hollow core doors with solid core doors or aluminium and glass doors. It warns that some solid core doors, such as those with a craftwood core, can still be damaged by water. The guidance also recommends corrosion-resistant door and window hardware. Swapping a hollow core door for a solid core one costs about $380 to $850 per door in 2026 estimates.
Do I need approval to change the windows on a heritage-listed Ipswich house?
A heritage listing on your address under the Ipswich City Plan 2025 can mean some changes need council approval. Places on the Queensland Heritage Register also have separate requirements under state law. Check the overlay with Ipswich City Council before ordering new windows or doors. The council's Heritage Adviser Service offers owners of historic buildings a limited free consultation with a conservation architect.
Can a handyman put up a small shed on my Lockyer Valley block without approval?
Lockyer Valley Regional Council treats a shed as self-assessable when it is no more than 10 square metres in area and 2.4 metres high, with no side longer than 5 metres. It must also keep an average (mean) height of 2.1 metres or less and meet the building codes and boundary setbacks. Larger sheds and farm buildings need approval unless they fall under the farm exception for small Class 10 buildings on farming land at least 200 metres from any road or boundary. Assembling a small kit shed costs about $350 to $900 once the base is ready.
Is a broken back door lock in a rented Ipswich house an emergency repair?
A lock that leaves the home insecure counts as an emergency repair under the Residential Tenancies Authority list. If the tenant cannot reach the nominated repairer within a reasonable time, they can arrange the repair for an amount up to 4 weeks' rent. The tenant then asks for reimbursement in writing with receipts, and the payer has at least 7 days to pay. If the money is not repaid, the tenant can make an urgent application to QCAT.
Who fixes a cracked cornice in a Ripley house finished this year?
Report it to the builder in writing first, because the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme has strict time limits. For a non-structural defect, you must become aware of it within 6 months of completion and lodge a claim within 7 months. Handyman repairs made in that period can make it harder to show which faults came from the builder's work. Book the handyman for extras such as blinds, shelving and wall mounting instead.
Why does a handyman wet-scrape paint on an old Ipswich cottage?
Homes and structures built before 1970 may contain high-lead paint under newer layers, according to Somerset Regional Council. The council advises that lead paint should never be dry sanded or sandblasted, since the risk rises when it is disturbed. Wet scraping, drop sheets and a fine-filter vacuum keep dust and flakes contained during small repairs. Larger stripping jobs suit a painter who handles lead paint removal with proper containment.
